I have a sorta funny story on bad luck and whisling, but it happened on land. I have this aunt and she is the greatest sweet heart of a person, really unique wholesome human being, but she also has a lot of phobias and one of them is people whistling close to her.
One day she was at a grocery store in a line waiting when a man behing here started cheerfully whistling a song. That made her gradually more unconfortable until she blew up. In tears she turns to the man and screams "YOU NEVER DO THAT AGAIN". People around tought the guy was abusing or harasing her in some manner, so our innocent whistler had to flee the store under the menace of being linched. Meanwhie she is totally nevous unable to speak and explain the situation, what makes her even more nervous and unable to speak.
It took quite a while for her to calm down and explain the situation to the mob trying to protect her.
In the end everything turned alright but our casual whistler is still on the lose and nobody was able to apologise to him.

I have a fascinating addendum to this. I went to (and still am) in school for theater. Theater practitioners are notorious for their superstitions (Don't say Macbeth in a theater, don't walk under a ladder, etc) but one of those was also "Do not whistle on stage." I was taught that this stemmed from the early days of theater. Early stage hands in the more modern and complex theaters were sailors in port. The rigging and fly lines were run by these sailors, particularly due to their knowledge and skills at rigging on ships, and as such, they would use whistles commands to adjust the rigging accordingly. Whistling was forbidden outside of this context for fear that a whistle could cause a piece of scenery to suddenly, and dangerously, change.
