Jumping from 17m you need to be careful how you enter into the water, similarly you need to be really careful if you're jumping into water that there's enough water there for you to not hit the bottom. If you're doing backflips you really need to know what you're doing to make sure you enter the water properly. The point is that jumping into the deep water was not in itself unsafe – what was unsafe was how the crew member did it and they were injured because they entered the water badly. The US Navy has been having swimcalls and hundreds of sailors have jumped from the decks of aircraft carriers, similarly during the Piper alpha fire crew jumped from the main platform to escape and survived.
Serious or fatal injuries can occur crossing the road – do it carefully.

I mistakenly thought, like the jumper, that water was relatively soft and harmless. I never fully appreciated the amount of force that’s exerted on the body if you enter the water at an angle that doesn’t displace water efficiently. Unlike the first jumper, the second jumper did an uncontrolled backflip. This is the kind of stupid shit I would do, so good to learn something today. I suppose in one small way this person didn’t die in vain.

From the description, it sounds like it was going be that he hit the safety boat. But he wasn't really "tombstoning". He was doing a backflip which probably put his neck in a vulnerable position and it caused a spinal injury. One of those freak accidents that happen all the time.
Stuff happens IRL, you can't "safety" them all away.

If you land flat on the water, it can knock the breath out of you causing your diaphragm to spasm and disorientation under the water can cause you to inhale water in panic. On a seperate note, my stepfather told me that someone dived off a lighthouse nr Fraserburgh when he was young and it stripped the skin back from his nails on entry (Ouch!!!). The higher you jump from , the more like hitting concrete it becomes. I used to work at a swimming pool and we were terrors for doing those sorts of things. The problem is when the 'unexperienced' try to copy you! Those with 'a couple of drinks' inside them on a sunday afternoon were worst.
