GREAT song from an even GREATER band. Try Suite Madame Blue next off their Equinox album. Please lead into it with Prelude 12. Suite Madame Blue IMO is one of the greatest rock songs in rock history. After that I'd go with the epic deep cut Man In The Wilderness and then Renegade. Thanks for playing Styx.

Although I am not a huge Styx fan, I think this song has one of the all-time best synth solos.
Vocalist Dennis Deyoung was eventually fired by the band he helped form, for being too bossy, to simplify it. He was replaced by a younger Canadian who recorded and toured under the name Gowan. in 1984/85 the industry buzz coming out of Toronto about Lawrence Gowan was such that for his album, "Strange Animal", he attracted Peter Gabriel's backing band, who in the 80s were the most in-demand session band in the world. You ought to give Gowan a listen. You could start with "Strange Animal" or "A Criminal Mind". His sound was a bit Avant-Garde and 80s-Progressive and his video for the latter track was quite innovative and original.

One of Styx's trademarks is a song that starts quiet and with sparse instrumentation, then segue into a more uptempo and sometimes rocky part, throwing all the instruments in. Other songs that follow this pattern include "Lady", "Suite Madame Blue", "Crystal Ball" – for an extreme example, "Renegade" has an early and very abrupt change from sweet acapella to a heavy guitar sound. I saw them in 1978. Excellent show.

Like Sam's Mom, I've also seen Van Halen and Styx, twice. The first time in 1978 on their Crystal Ball tour and then again last year. I just love them! Thanks for reviewing them and I hope you'll do a lot more. And keep listening to Sam's Mom!

I gotta recommend a deep cut from the Kilroy Was Here album, a song called Just Get Through This Night. Tommy Shaw on vocals, it's one of those songs that just pulls you in.
It opens with a Japanese "banjo" (the exact instrument eludes me, but my guess, based on the quick search I did, would be a Shamisen/Samisen, or possibly a Sanshin), which is almost eerie or spooky.
The song is just so good. The lyrics are pretty good, too, which seems to be about perseverance and having the strength to go on against great adversity, as he states in many ways how he could achieve so many other great accomplishments, if he could only "just get through this night".
It's about 6 minutes of awesome and is one of my faves.

You’ll need to hear quite a few tracks from Styx before you can really “get” their sound. They are unquestionably the most musically diverse band you’ll ever hear, largely because they have 3 songwriters and 3 lead singers with distinctly different musical backgrounds. Because of that, Styx has something for everybody. Prog, hard rock, pop, ballads, folk and techno.
I highly recommend Renegade, A.D. 1928/Rockin’ the Paradise, Blue Collar Man, Castle Walls, Too Much Time On My Hands, Crystal Ball, Miss America…I could go on and on! Truly one of the world’s greatest rock bands. Great vocals, soaring harmonies, brilliant instrumentalists. Enjoy!
