Hey bud that drill bit is an sds but you need a special drill for it. It will always be wobbly in regular still.

I think you might regret using 304 grade s/s. Even the quality of 316 s/s is pretty poor these days. Old 316 was way better. Any bolt we have that is A2 (304 grade) rusts away in no time in a marine environment. Check every nut and bolt you buy. You don't want to be using anything other than 316 grade where is will be subject to saltwater, that is, outside the boat.

Use Cobalt drill bits for drilling stainless Steel they will stay sharp longer, your doing a great job Mark

For drilling stainless, Go slow! Lubricate often with a good cutting oil. If you see your oil smoke. Stop and re-lube and let it cool for a few seconds. Use a sharp bit! Don't let the bit get hot. You should get long spiral shavings not chips. You'll find that you will be able to drill a hole much faster by going slow and use good pressure. I mean really slow. Use a proper center punch. Keep up the great work!

I like to put a nut on the threaded rod before I cut it. Then unscrew the nut over the cut area to restore the threads. It saves a lot of time.

When you drill a hole in steel especially stainless turn down the rpms to 6oo rpm and use a small drill bit like one eight and work your way up to the size you need. gradually. Hope that helps ya Mark! makes it a whole lot easier.
