When drive belts/chains/shafts go south, I always inspect what they're driving! Has what they're driving increased in resistance? Is it time to relubricate or replace some bearings? What about pistons or valves?

Real World: When my second alternator belt failed in three months, Dad said, "check the alternator for ease of motion." There was no ease of motion, so I replaced the fried bearings in the alternator. Walla! No more belt failures.
