It's great to know that in the end, things have worked out. We all must persevere to overcome our challenges, and you two have done so. Someone may have already asked this in the comments… I'm assuming that since the insurance companies have worked everything out, you have been taken care of minus the deductible?

So glad you did not give up. Sorry it took so long for the outcome. I work with acetone and aerosols and yes it is very dangerous more so then the average person would think.

So much could be said here. Why was the cap off the acetone? If the answer was he was using it when it ignited, then he wouldn't have any skin on his hands. Why couldn't they smell it build up? Why didn't the second person question the boat being unlocked? Why don't they announce themselves when walking into an unlocked boat? It is totally unacceptable that Just Catamarans allowed this to happen yet didn't replace the boat before now. The version we were told very soon after this happened while in Cape Town: Two guys sent by Just Catamarans were working in the boat, one knocked a can of acetone over near another guy who was using a heat gun or torch. Just Catamarans has insufficient insurance to cover all the damage. The acetone should have been capped between use and wasn't. This version makes a lot more sense than someone not smelling or questioning the build up of acetone in a confined space to high enough percentage in the atmosphere that it somehow ignited magically.

Also had no idea aceton was so dangerous on a boat, so after watching your video we went through the boat, found all the aceton and threw it off the boat. We will also make sure nobody uses it onboard anymore. Thanks for the tip and sorry for your tragic loss, plus wasted years of dealing with insurance. In the end it all worked out, but you won't get those years of sailing back. We know that is the one thing that hurts the most. Take care and happy sailing. How can anyone consider this as an "accident"? This was pure negligence. Using a flammable substance in an enclosed space without proper fire prevention precautions is a negligent action, not "accidental". Why does no one put blame on those responsible? The boat owner should have no expenses due to the negligence of others. They are due compensation for two years of not being able to use their boat plus any related expenses. Punitive damages should also be sought from the contractor and insurance companies.

Thank you for sharing what happened-I work with solvents as an artist and I have acetone and paint thinner onboard our Lagoon catamaran. Removing both today because although I know how to handle and store them, it’s not worth the risk .

Why the acetone guy was working when the electrical guy was booked, is a deadly conflict in scheduling. You would think that they would know how dangerous it was doing this work, as I assume they do it all the time. Thank God nobody was hurt, and you and the other poor boat owner can move on with life and living your dreams.
