Not sure if mentioned but there is a clear difference of crew expectations if a yacht is a charter boat, live aboard or non charter non live aboard. Charters the crew normally share a very healthy tip pool at the end of each charter and Christmas would generally be higher than other charters. Some owners will have the chef work at their land side residence to cook Christmas dinner and cover New Year requirements also and the chef is well looked after. Chefs are very under the radar but good ones with a solid reference book from other owners are paid very well and looked after. Rotations, this is time onboard vs time off and whether paid time off is a really big factor for crew of any discipline, but of course anyone holding a Deck/Eng/ETO CoC have to have relevant amounts of seatime with relevant voyages to maintain their licences this is a really really crucial point right now as that time onboard must be verified and proven, which some in the industry are struggling with right now because of their own choices……

Do most owners even know their crew members? or are they anonymous workers like waiters at a restaurant? Do owners actually choose/hire crew or is that all done by the yacht management company that provides a "turn key" yacht that is oprational and staffed to the onwer? <br>I guess Putin would vet who gets t work on his yachts, but does that mean he would play cards with them or just simpy treat them a robots that serve him?

I ALWAYS provided presents to my crew and staff but through out the year. Every port we visited I paid for a night out for the entire crew permitted by the captain....thats not my call for safety reason. Transport, food and drinks (alcohol within reason). My family and guests were aware and they needed to take care of themselves on that night. My crew turnover rate was almost zero.....except for family emergencies.

When I worked on ultra large containerships I worked for a German company for a while. Mostly the ships were owned by banks and operated by ship managers who didn’t care much about the crews but I spent 3 years on one very large ship with 24 crew members. That ship was owned by a family of doctors and dentists and was their pension fund. That family requested and received a crew list be emailed to them at every crew change and we all received a very nice birthday present and card on the right day and a nice quality Christmas present and card each. The British ship owners I spent many years with never gave their crew presents, as soon as we were merged with a Dutch company and were then taken over by a Danish company everyone on board received a small but nice Christmas gift, it was really appreciated by everyone spending Christmas onboard. If you were on leave at Christmas then you received an electronic gift voucher for a decent amount of value - usually in excess of £50. British shipowners thought all you deserved was a greetings telegram or email (same one to all the fleet) from the Chairman, that was it!
