I knew Ted Ellis when I was a child. He was a friend of my Grandfather as they met often at the local pub Coldham Hall in Surlingham. He was a fountain of information about the Broads and its wildlife and always had a story to tell. In fact for many years he wrote a daily piece for the local paper on the local wildlife. They were proof of his knowledge and amazing powers of observation. A very interesting man.

A very good list of broadlands people 'who made a difference', I'm sure there could have been many more too. As many of us would first have experienced the broads aboard a hire boat, perhaps we might think of someone like John Loynes (one of the first to hire boats), maybe Herbert Woods or Percy Hunter (whose vintage yachts still sail the broads)…

So fascinating to hear of these interesting people and I do remember Ted Ellis as he used to appear sometimes on BBC programmes. There must have been so much peat extracted to create what we now have as the broads. I wonder how many thousands or millions of tons was extracted over time?
