Making plugs the way you are is great for thru hulls, not so great for plugs in planks.
There are three distinct directions of wood grain in a plank.
Longitudinal, diagonal and perpendicular.
For a plug you want the exposed grain to be longitudinal in line with the surrounding grains but a cross grain of the wood.

The closer you get to crossing grains the more easily water intrudes.
The way you have done it leaves an end grain exposed rather than cross grain.

Trees are designed to carry water from the bottom to the top, long ways, longitudinal with the grain.
You've created a wick, a sponge.
That's great if you're trying to absorb water, bad if you are trying to stay dry.
Hence why bungs are better long or diagonal grain. They absorb water, swell and seal.

Bungs split longways, plugs split short way.
Plugs cut off easier, cleaner and smoother with the correct grain.
That was how I was taught anyway. I doubt it makes much difference as long as it works for you.
