Looks like it was in the middle of a refit now. What a bummer, I was 16 and head deep in every Yachting/Motorboat and Sailing/Robb Report magazine I could get hold of when it was on every cover.

a significant amount of sentimentality would need to be present to make the suicidal levels of investment into this old yacht. far more than a simple replacement with a new 39m.

Obviously it is still costing somebody money, dock fees, 2 crew members on board, (Living on board?) then shore power, mobil pump outs.

This is the trouble with wealth.
The owner doesn't respect the money needed to maintain a yacht with a cool pedigree. Not only historic movie, but a speed record for the beginning of an Era of super yachts.

I remember seeing her docked along A1A in South Palm Beach in early 90s. She was gem back then.

What surprises me is that someone went to the expense of refitting her less than 10 years ago and she's come to this level of ruination in this short time.

This is the problem with yachts / leisure craft all over. If you have enough money to repair an old boat, you have enough money to buy something new. No one wants old, damaged, obsolete craft. And no one wants the cost of scrapping them in a sustainable manner. They get stripped of all value and abandoned as has happened here. It’s just a huge lump of single use plastic.
