Another good episode with some lovely water Eli. There are 6 boats transiting the Red Sea at the moment with about that many having already completed the passage without incident. (Apparently lowly sailors are not the targets). I’m pretty sure your insurance company will run for the hills if you’d attempt to make a claim though 😳. Let’s just hope the world has taken a chill pill 💊 by this time next year and we’re all loving each other again 🤞
Oh, I love to just float away in these places with you each week, vicariously for now!!
Nice instruction on the use of differential power.
Awesome video. Cheers guys
Hamfisted student 😉
Amazing place’s beautiful ruins love your channel And very happy to see There were no budgie smugglers in this episode. Keep the boardies on John don’t want to know about the sausage and two spuds😂
Polaroids😎 for mark one eyeball checks .
The big problem is the narrows leaving …its very narrow for big ships …
Is there any way of launching further down the straights..overland?
Otherwise small boat pirates are more of a risk than Drones and missiles .. they are aiming for bigger targets .. they may have a convoy escorting system in operation by then.. as even the Chinese are feeling the pinch.
Fantastic episode as ever! Good on ya! I am so glad you are using radio headsets to communicate with each other. I wish more sailing couples would do this as clear communication is VITAL in dangerous areas. The idea that a few hundred dollars could be the difference between a safe crossing and a total loss of the boat should be a no-brainer. Portofino is looking amazing, too. Looking forward to further updates. Happy sailing!❤🙏👍
About this route, there’s a lot more to it. As we’re planning from Poland to Dubai, the other way around we’ve been investigating the possibilities and issues.
Going to the Med is nice but you cannot stay longer than 3 months due to visa, unless you get a nomad visa.
As for the Red Sea there’s still issues with piracy in Yemen and Somalia. Still doable, but when you’re almost free to cross the Atlantic you must pass orca territory. Which is a huge issue with 250 attacks last year.
Hence when the USA is your destination I would really consider Dubai, the Maldives, Seychelles, Madagascar, South Africa, st Helena, etc in direction of the USA that’s a great sailing area.
In that route the only thing to fear is weather and a few reefs.
Just my five cents.
Turkey is key to Martin Luther's rebellion. When Constantinople became Istanbul, the Christians ran to Europe and the locals found that their Bibles were different than the Bibles that came through Rome. The Geneva Bible was written. When the Pilgrims came to America they used the Geneva Bible. The translators were kissing up to the King, because there is no James in the Geneva Bible. The Book of James is Yakov in the Geneva Bible.
I am hoping your stay in Turkiye has been a good and a memorable one. I am sure the food and the people of the country of my birth has left a good impression on you. I envy you since I have not been back for over 55 years.
Seychelles, Cape Town, Caribbean…
Oh my goodness! The water around Santa Claus island is breathtaking! The clarity was unbelievable and I would have been tempted to drop the hook and never leave. lol 😊 Thank you John for the mooring ball explanation. You made that so simple to understand and answered all my questions. I can’t wait until the updates with video on the Portofino. If they are attaching the hulls now does that mean the boat has been flipped? Is it sitting upright for this attachment? Please be careful when sailing in or near the Red Sea. It is so unstable and I worry about your safety. We wouldn’t want anything to happen to you both so please error on the side of safety! Take care and thank you once again for sharing your journey. 😊
Sorry to say but have lived and sailed here for 5 years and the drama over depths was ….. my draught of 2.7m has never been a problem!
Hello you two.
Do your yanmars have that new feature with built in hand pumps for oil changes?
WOW another great episode John and Eli!!! The 52 is looking great – needs a coat of paint however! 🤣On such small engines with low horse power such as the one's you are using, do they still require a flexible marine coupling to the final shaft? I was thinking of all the changes in thrust when you were showing examples of how to manoeuvre and it caused me to think…As you know, often couplings are used to help with alignment. I'm of the opinion that Rafaele's experience and attention to detail will negate such an alignment issue, but vibration and stress on the engines is always a concern.
I love that area you were visiting this week. The walkway ruins seemed to have every single rock 'circled', do you know is there any reason for this? Or is this part of the construction technique I wonder? As to the sailing route, I guess you will be watching the news with great interest over the journey south and evaluating things as the year progresses. Would you and Eli be against sailing south from the Seychelles all the way down and around South Africa if things do not get better? Even with all 'SA's' troubles it would provide reasonable places to keep provisioning for fuel and food. I hope you guys don't 'prune' to much with the wonderful Turkish waters. I'm looking forward to next weeks instalment eagerly! Fair 💨's and Following 🌊's.
100% agree with the bigger engine choice, very small weight difference and the extra power is great when you need it the most. We did the fuel burn numbers on our new build and the fuel consumption was pretty much the same and the engines are working way less. Nice work guys its exciting seeing your vessel develop!
If the Red Sea is not an option and the choice is East. Please keep the western coast of BC, Canada, in mind. Happy sailing and more great adventures.
Calling out conditions while at the bow with "here" and/or "there" necessitates the helms-person divert attention to the person making the call outs. Often the callouts must be completely ignored to focus on charts, sonar trends and depth readings. Not until there is panic in the voice would the vague callouts get attention.
Instead of "here" or "there" a direction and distance allows the helms-person to paint a mental picture whilst looking at and comparing charts and sonar treds. Relative direct (11-oclock, slightly port, slightly left) works best. Distance doesn't matter, can be; little ways, danger close, feet, meters or the number of Johns laid head to toe toe (fathoms)
when looking for reefs polarized glasses make a huge difference.
Oludeniz … wow just wow!!!!!!
Excellent Captain's tip!
Another fantastic video. Hopefully they will have the conflict resolved in time for your departure from Dubai.
So completely LOVE your episodes. Thank you for sharing your adventures
Under no circumstances should you go through the Red Sea! Going through the Red Sea is not worth the risk, even if they have resolved their issues. Yemen is looking for hostages so they bargain with Western countries. Don't forget Somali pirates are still active and you still have to pass close to Israel and Egypt, Egypt's government is not stable. Enjoy South Africa, plan your passage to coincide with the sardine run and do a safari. Again, there is significant U.S. Naval activity going on in the Red Sea and Eastern Med and you do not want to get caught up in any of this, and it will not resolve itself in the next year or so…
👍
You've really sold me on sailing Turkey. I had no idea how wonderful Turkey is! I guess I've seen too many movies with bad dudes with guns in the desert.
Excellent video. The Portofino folks seem to be making great progress.
I don't think I would worry too much about the Houthies. They seem after bigger targets. and you'll be out of range of them in just 1-2 days or so. I'd be more concerned about the pirates off Somalia and the orcas when leaving the Med. Just my opinion. You're closer to the situation than me. Listen to your gut. Probably a good idea to visit the Maldives and Seychelles now, as once you head west, it'll be years and years till you get back there. Nahoa had some really good videos of those places, if you haven't seen them already.
What a beautiful video. I can feel the atmosphere.
Loved the insight to your options once your Portofino has been completed, the Maldives’s and Seychelles sound the perfect place to start the next chapter. If you headed east you could still take in and cruise through South East Asia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Phillipines before heading up to Japan then perhaps Hawaii. This will depend on the seasons as you will be looking to avoid the Typhoons. If it’s not pirates it’s Typhoons the joys of sailing the world 😂😂😂
Awesome gadget for putting ropes onto mooring buoys, life can be simple when you have the right gear, loved your lesson on manoeuvring. Looking forward to your next vid, keep up your excellent vids. 😊👍s
