Those are great engines and 5,000 hours isn't any hours on that motor if it runs it will run your lifetime how much do you have left lol That's how I look at things in that Perkins that is also an awesome awesome motor it will run and run just like the old Continental engines have fun out there be safe

When I bought my 24m Sloffe Aak Dutch barge, I was told of the engine…if it doesn't smoke, it isn't a DAF!! …and what your man said there, that it needs a good run is very true. A good engine of old Tech but it needs using. I have also been told many times by other skippers…You buy a ship…you work on it all the time, and then you die!! Which probably is also true. Enjoy!! Maybe see you in Lelystadt or Urk one day…

Make it electric. Went through same process and regret i did not went to electric. You have room for batteries.

Just my opinion here. Do the minimum just to get it running first. Check it out once it's running. Then make an assessment of the engine's condition. It only has 5000 hours.
The engines in my boat sat for 9 years. I changed the hoses, and belts, and filters, and one coolant pump. I refurbished all of the heat exchangers. They run great! I'll just do a valve adjustment before we go on any long trips.

It’s a DAF 1160 engine, that will always run. I have seen them in trucks with over 2 million kilometers on tje tacho with out any problem

Going through something similar on our CAT D399s, to check on the overall condition and on the not too expensive checks we bore scoped and pressure tested. On an engine that old I'd definitely check and service all the heat exchanger cores. There's a good chance at least some of the injectors are worn so I'd pull those and service/replace those too, ditto with the glow pugs.
