I always liked this song…never was on my top 100 chart but was just one of those songs I loved listening to and singing to…its simple but just an easy catchy tune to listen to

What strikes me about this song is just how patient the Commodores were in unfolding everything it has to offer, revealing a serious level of musical confidence and sophistication.

Yes sir, you "better know" Mr. Lionel Richey – Major Icon. No down time with him. When I heard he left The Commodores and heard his solo stuff, I realized – oh, he "was" the sound of The Commodores. Like 90% was L.R. (I love The Commodores too, now – but c'mon, you gotta admit, he was the main attraction." Beautiful, exquite music and touching stories. This one in particular was so tragic bc the person hurt was so in love and really tried, but there comes a time when you have to say good-bye and let that other person "sail on." He told her (via the divorce) I'm giving you back your name. Guess she was bound to ramble. Thx guys, I waited a few years for y'all to play this one.

As you, Alex instanced, the structure of this song is just so self-assured – it saves the hookiest bit until last, but musically hints that it's coming up almost all the way through. So, that when it does get to it, there is such a great sense of fulfillment. It's a masterpiece of song writing and the musicality touches right through and the absolutely superb production it make it one of my top 3 songs of the 1970s.
