You need a red light for inside the bridge/nav area for night navigation. If your interior lighting is white it destroys your night vision of your eyes and you will not be able to see outside the boat much at night. So instead, use red lighting inside at night and it will preserve your night vision and you will be able to see outside much better. You can either wire individual red lights in areas you need them, like above the helm and chart areas, or you can install RGB LED’s in the interior and set them to red at night.

For future reference. Aluminum oxides vary quickly, like minutes. Paint has great difficulty adhering to that oxide. I’ve found that the best way to prep it for painting is to wipe down the surface with a strong degreaser like MEK before sanding. Sand only what you can paint it 15 minutes. Use a clean dry cloth to wipe off dust. Do NOT use any solvent or degreaser after sanding. Any cleaner even pure alcohol will cause a reaction on aluminum and reduce adhesion. Do not touch the prepared surface to be painted with your fingers! Immediately paint after sanding. Use any high quality paint like appliance paint, automotive or epoxy. This method works much better than priming with zinc chromate. Pure naked aluminum is your friend and time is your enemy when it comes painting it.

Ben, please don't forget to use Tef-Gel, or similar on the stainless hardware, keeps the galling, on the stainless, and corrosion down, when used with aluminum mast/boom fittings.
