Beautiful place. Sharks no matter which kind they are still creep me out though, but they are beautiful to see. Manta's are pretty cool too. When i worked here in Vegas at Ceasar's, underneath the Atlantis show where the big fish tank is, is where the aquarium staff's place was, they hatched their own sharks and manta's. Down there they had a large open sort of lagoon shaped tank where they raised manta's.
I used to go down there a lot to see the baby sharks in regular kind of fish tanks they were raising. They hung them with wooden clothes pins in there, and you could see the unhatched sharks in there wiggling around, brown egg sacks about 3 to 4 inches in size.
The manta's were my faves though, in the lagoon tank they would swim around, never stopping, and the top of that tank was about waist high. If you stood next to it, they would see you, and sort of beg for some food, They would get right up next to the edge of it which was rounded and had smooth lava rock and made to look natural. When they saw you, they would do drive by's with one "wing" flapping over the edge of it. You would reach in and they loved to be scratched on their belly's just behind their mouths. You keep your hand in the scratching there for 30 seconds or so and they would stop flapping and kinda keep themselves on your hand getting those belly's scratched. They loved belly scratches! I loved going down there every night visiting with them, and they were just like puppy dogs. The staff would raise them and either they went into the big tank or they went to other places like zoo's and wherever around the country, These things were baby's and about ten inches or so in overall diameter but i don't know what their ages would have been at that stage, and they had grown no barbs on their tails at that point. I bet wild manta's would like belly rub's too, but i wouldn't want to to try it! They get spooked and snap that tail, don't need a Steve Irwin moment.That's my baby ray story.
