  1. Now I understand why – growing up racing 420s in Newport, RI – I always got drawn in by the Hans Christians. Glowing in meticulously maintained brightwork or weathered and patina'd, they always set me to daydreaming and I didn't fully understand why. Now I do.

I'd love to see a similar review of the Nauticat 43.

  2. What is the company that still built these (hans cristian) boats ? What is their internet page? And what is the price for a new HC 38?

  3. Nobody mentions the Baba-Panda-Tashiba line designed by Bob Perry. While Bob has a wide variety of designs, I think he called the early Hans’s his “bastard children” since they were not his design but many folks commonly called them Perry Boats. After owning two production catamarans between my two Perry boat ownership, i find their shortcomings still make them more desirable for me, especially how tough they are. Am I the only one to go BACK to a monohull after catamaran ownership?

  4. Great review. I love the Hans Christian boats. I would love to see you do the Hans 33. I believe you may done one before, but not for Practical Sailor. I noticed a flash picture of the Hans 33 "Pearl Noir". I love that boat!

  5. Hey Tim,

Nice one again, good to see practical sailor also know how to attract good talent too. I would love to see a comparison of the worlds best ocean going blue water boats + 45' Like Amel & Cracken. How each has a different way of getting the job done. BTW love the Hans Christian boats. Have you seen the UT SV Fair Isles ripper boat. What model is theirs? Looking forward to the next vid.

  6. Isn't chord width important too? It seems like a single line of bolts on a narrow keel will transfer a lot of stress to the hull. I remember the I.O.R boats of the 70's and 80's in which the rule necessitated a keel width that had keel bolts in pairs, and I don't remember any keel failures.

  7. Crewing aboard a tall ship made me appreciate the craftmanship of those type of vessels. The Hans Christian will probably be the boat I retire on.

  8. I was a liveaboard blue water cruiser back in the sixties and seventies, and just about everyone we knew used sextants – celestial navigation was de rigueur for true sailors (and still should be imho). Every serious passage making cruising boat had at least one crewmember adept at celestial.

  9. Another fantastic video, Tim! Your attention to detail and passion for sailing really shine through. Keep up the great work! Baba40 and Mason 44 would be my choices for upcoming videos

  10. Hans Christians evoke romantic nostalgia and if I could bring myself to allow teak to weather, I'd have one today. I once heard a Swedish owner vent in a heavy accent that Hans Christians can "go a looooong way, and take a loooong time a-gettin' dere too!" Every vessel has a mission statement that should inform our purchases. You won't arrive first in an HC, but you'll arrive.
