Putting in a designated propane locker sealed and vented to the outside of the boat would be a challenge. They don't make alcohol stoves any more and going electric would require some big upgrades in the electrical system. But, like you said that system currently is not safe and best to remove it or hang a propane tank of the stern of the boat and run a new hose.
