It's also great for exiting a bows-in finger pontoon. The bow crash is avoided by going easy on the revs.

Using a closed loop on approach is dangerous, even in the best of circumstances. If you need to abort, you run into trouble (and if you don't know the situation at the dock and it's rings, or something else…). Instead, take the bight of the mid cleat half loop, all the way back, and drop that around the cleat from aft. The running end should also be back. Shorten it, to prevent your bow from swinging around hard.
