The "no wake" rule is also there to protect yachts with large keels. At certain tides, many of these yachts only have a few centimetres between the bottom of the keel and terra-firma. A larger wake will cause the yacht to rise and then slam itself against the bottom, just like a pile driver would work. As an example, (according to AI), a 10m yacht with a keel has an average weight of 3,600kg (very close to 8,000lbs). That slamming will cause sever structural damage to the yacht.
