A planing or semi planing hulled boat depending on the damage to the hull often will stay afloat longer if keep on plane especially if the dame to the hull is towards the bow of the boat. Since I don’t know if how the hull was compromised I will not say if the Captain of the boat was correct in his decision but I will defer to it since he was there until facts prove that his decision was the incorrect one. That said I will say life vests etc should have been distributed as soon as the hull damage was discovered and it was apparent that they were not going to make it to shore.

In the late 70s friends and I were on the Blythe River in a new to my friend a 5 passenger speed boat that had a tunnel type hull with a 125 Mercury outboard, as we stopped to switch skiers and we started taking on water but it was going down at the back, I yelled at the driver he started the engine and hit the gas as I tried to get to the drain plug. I could not but the water was going out some how but only as long we were going 20mph or faster. every time we slowed down to pick up the skier it started sinking fast at the back with the motor nearly under water. So, all the commotion brought another boat to get the skier out of the river so we could keep moving fast back to the boat ramp. After all that and it was on the trailer we saw the big crack along one side of the tunnel hull.
That forward motion kept the water sucked out, I am wondering if this ferry boat crew may have been trying to do the same thing. Maybe they found that slowing down made it worse.
So they kept going until they had to stop. It would be interesting to find out.

I'd be happy with the captain, the water in the cabin is minimal, so get us as close to shots. We can evacuate the vessel if it gets a bit worse. Same time I'd be worried the fibre glass didn't crack more if we did go at speed. His debut decision worked, so thumbs up

All that commotion, splashing, shouting on the surface made by 48 panicking people. That is 100% a scenario I fear. Any sharks in the area would be curious...

Those were 'rough conditions' for the rescue?? I've scuba dived from a small RHIB in rougher conditions, and got back on board without incident, it wasn't exactly fun to be honest, but no-one on board at the time described it as rough. Regarding the emergency flotation devices, aren't they mostly inflated by a small co2 cartridge, activated by a super simple to operate, blatantly obvious pull toggle? It's not like they are likely to fail, even if old, unless some idiot had previously fired a cartridge and not replaced it. They shouldn't have even been trying to inflate them anyway while still inside the boat, it was too confined to have everyone trying to move about, even stay seated, wearing inflated flotation devices, they don't inflate them inside a ditched aircraft for the same reason.
