US Sailing currently has 35,000 personal members. The RYA has 100,000+ and 500,000 in affilliated clubs. Admittedly the RYA also represents other than sailing boat sailors but give an idea of the current lack of impact. Oops, Charlie has just quoted the same figures

Listening to this podcast sparked some ideas for me. I started to wonder if US SAILING could establish a department dedicated to supporting local sailing clubs, sailing centers, yacht clubs, and similar organizations in their advertising efforts. This could function like a business development center (BDC), which many other industries, such as car dealerships, utilize to promote their products and services. If US SAILING took the initiative to market sailing as an engaging activity and sport, it could greatly benefit volunteer organizations by attracting more people to participate.

Historically, 200 years ago, nearly everyone knew how to operate a water vessel, but now that number has dwindled to less than one percent. Selling sailing is akin to selling cars, boats, or homes; it requires creating value around the activity, product, or service. While not everyone needs to know how to sail, we can change the perception of sailing in suburban areas by marketing it effectively. Just as soccer has gained popularity with countless fields cropping up over the last two decades, it’s time for us to take proactive steps in promoting our sport. If US SAILING led the charge by establishing a BDC department, it would generate significant value and benefits for the sailing community.
John Maddux
