I sailed with Viking Ocean in July, and although it is quite pricey – particularly for solo cruisers like me – the people I met were almost entirely those hard-working souls (like me) who were treating themselves to a very nice vacation. My fellow cruisers were very friendly and down-to-earth. I’ll be on Explora II in April 2026 and hope to find the same.

Minor point….the mega cruise ship-within-a-ship itinerary also comes with a private island stop, whereas the luxury ship itinerary may include some unusual port stops.

Reminds me of the Japanese proverb; " Everyone is special, no one is special." The ship within a ship concept feels more special, more options, and as you pointed out more interesting people. While the Explora ships are are beautiful, a terrific decor and relaxed vibe. The Emporium Marketplace is absolutely amazing. I found the lack of variety, crowded spaces and lack of beverage choices disappointing. On our sailing, service was inconsistent and I never encountered that when sailing in the Retreat with Celebrity. Also, Celebrity has phenomenal bartenders. Great comparison and definitely a "vibe" decision to be made.

Thanks for your overall. I’m doing the Explora Journeys Explora III (still at the shipyard ) in a year: Iceland to Greenland to Quebec for 10 days. I’ve done all the mega ships - Royal, Norwegian, Carnival, Princess. I’m a young retiree who suffered a stroke a few years ago, and I’m still fighting back with improvement. My first cruise since the strike was a June Alaskan Discovery Princess cruise in a mini suite. It was amazing, but with my low vision due to optical nerve damage as well as having to use a walker to balance, the trip was full of independence and excitement. I only had a couple of issues. But I already knew I was also paying for my Explora cruise meantime. My travel agent (also a longtime friend) had suggested it and hey, flying to Iceland will be a definite experience. But I am looking forward to Explora. I enjoy quiet, good food, the entertainment is fine (the last few large scale shows I saw - one excellent, the other very meh). I have been researching Explora cruises from recurred. I have friends going on Explora I and II this fall. Let’s just say I’m anticipating the change of pace. I liked slides and stuff in the past, but was never what I cruised for anyway. So if I like Explora, I will save up and go again. And I haven’t completely given up the mega ships. I’m going back to Alaska in 2027 - on the Norwegian Joy.

Wow. It's like you can read my mind. I've enjoyed The Retreat four times now, looking forward to my 5th and 6th times upcoming. But….I have often wondered about the higher end lines, like Explora. My next cruise on Ascent is to simply enjoy the cruise itself, and all the ship has to offer. Others have been more port intensive. After you have explained the differences, I'm not more satisfied with what I've received and what I will receive in the future in The Retreat. Great video. Had to subscribe!
