I've seen twin outboards on power cats ever since I've paid attention to boats. But watching Tim Weston build his here on youtube was the first time I'd seen a sailing cat with them. Lowered down on platforms on the inside of either hull. Kind of blew my mind. Then I discussed it with friends, who in turn pretty much decided I was a nutjob. Mounted further forward could also mitigate coming out of the water. But I like the idea alot.

I see Yanmar has a 40hp diesel outboard. I wonder how that would be. I'm a little concerned about a big tank of gasoline offshore. Guess I would need a genset as well.

Own a MaineCat 30 with two Tohatsu 9.9FI outboards. Perfect? No. But way, way, way better than dealing with diesels. I understand that once the cat gets up to 40+ ft outboards may not be practical. But for small, light multihulls they are excellent.

Not necessarily for catamarans, but in general, here in the PNW outboards tend to be preferred to inboards. Easier corrosion maintenance, redundancy, ease of replacement. The pros outweigh the cons if you can size your motors properly to the task. Not sure where that dropoff would be for a cat… guess you could keep adding motors. haha.

Just looking at a diesel engine down in the bowels of a hull makes me want to gag.

Let’s say your propeller gets caught in a fishing line or rope from a crab trap and you’re by yourself…simply push a button and your propeller is out of the water and you cut the line off in a few minutes and carry on…only with an outboard engine is this possible.

My ex father in law did this 20 yrs ago on a 48' ply glass cat he built in Hawaii. The outboards were center mounted to a swing arm type of platform. Worked like a dream…

Just buy a diesel outboard ,,, yes they make them.
