skiper wants to get cas close 2 a shore as he can- its normal instinct, howver in sme sistuations its best to go slow depending on were n hw v flooding is happening. no engine rm, its got ob mtrs. releived no fatalaties, i didnt c any lifrafts- its a ferry rite?, thought that b mandotary?
Plywood death trap? Very common in the far east.
Cold water alone will not kill you in a few minutes if you are wearing a life jacket. It will take half an hour in ice water to get your body into moderate hypothermia.
Without life jacket though, you can drown even in still water, because you lose muscle function in your extremities after say 15 minutes.
In the first photograph it shows the ferry is powered by 4 outboard motors on the transom. Its possible the pilot felt it was better to use the speed to keep the boat higher in the water.
SOS! They are about to sink the S.S United States!
I figured since it's in the gulf now, they would rethink it. Put it on private land! Dig a trench or, put it in a cove. Put the ship in it, and back fill with landscape. And you have landmark! Much less expensive to convert into a hotel, etc. Just an absolute waste!!! SOS!
Pass this on!
Scary situation for sure. Glad everyone is safe 🙏 God Bless
And all this "fun" for $3000 a night.
Did the pilot make an emergency call in advance? Or only when the abandon ship was called?
In that style boat he was keeping it above water by trying to keep it on plane. Not only did it keep it afloat longer, it's closing the distance to help and could in some cases allow the scuppers to drain. It's similar to what you're supposed to do if you forget the drain plug 😮 don't ask me how I know 😂. I've actually saved 2 boats this was. One time I forgot the plug and another I hit a wine bottle at speed and holed my hydrostream. Either case I would have sunk by slowing down and actually saved my hydrostream by pulling the plug and draining the boat enough to get it in the slings at the marina.
Stopping over fishing would get rid of a lot of plastic since most of it comes from fishing vessels, climate change is a natural process so they would be wasting their time on that
Thanks!
Yes so true
Out board motors
Ah Wave Hit It ?? Chance in a Million !! He was trying to get beyond the environment !
If I was the captain of a planing or semi-planing hull vessel and I thought I was taking on water: the first thing I would do is hit the throttles! What do you mean to imply by criticizing this decision? If help was only 19 minutes away it was because of this captain's decision to move the boat as fast as possible in the direction of help! Not only that but a planning hull lifts out of the water (as I know you understand) so it is likely that the captain minimized further ingress of water by moving fast. Slowing down could have resulted in help not arriving for an hour or more. We do not have enough information to be critical of this captain's decisions. He/she may have saved everyone's life in those moments of critical decision making time.
If you look at the footage the ferry got outboard enjins.
My daughter and her husband travelled on one of the Maldives fast ferries, they went so fast in rough seas that a large wave washed over the bow and broke the front window, everyone was soaked but the boat carried on.
i have been on a small boat that only made it back to port because ot was cept on a plane. alway hard to guge when your not there
All those commenting on the outboard motors should note that you have the luxury of seeing the photos of the type of vessel, something which our host dd not have at the time of recording. At the time of recording we only had the onboard footage. We got the still images of the exterior later that day.
And once the bow is underwater, the idea of planning becomes less plausible. In the footage the windows were almost underwater.
He also prefaced his comments with the fact he was not there so it's possible he did not have all the data.
I have been on one of those ferries between the airport at male island & back again & there are no safety instructions when you board. Those guys just drive them like mad & I would be interested to know how many of them have skipper licences. They just plow on irrespective of the rolling, I was terrified both ways.
No life rafts?! That’s sharky water there!
Why don't people start bailing water out of the boat instead of sitting there doing nothing?. You've got 48 people to start bailing, also ditch the suitcases. get some weight off. Also try and find the source of the leak, it may be an easy fix or at least a temporary fix to slow the water ingress. Just sitting there is pointless, try and save yourselves
My thought is the Captain was trying to get to Male before the ferry sank
straight forward , upright and clear . Data . No Wishy-Washy . Thanks
There does not seem to be any SOLAS (life rafts or regulated lifejackets) or STCW compliance.
Inflatable Life Jackets:
They should be kept inside a vacuum-sealed plastic bag, because they can be easily punctured
The life jackets shown in this video are hanged on a hook without any protection
Travelers should know that in most of the World the infrastructure is usually out of code
Powered by outboards – no engine room.
Water coming in – possible crack in the hull?
The lifejackets SHOULD be serviced annually. I wonder if they had been?
How many crew were there?
Safety procedures? The gent handing out life-jackets was definitely European.
Just typical of the "just don't care" attitudes seen in some parts of the world.
Note the high freeboard of the Police launch – it must have been difficult getting people from the water on board, unless they had a short boarding ladder?
This dork talking about climate change those islands were supposed to be under water 20 years ago
Those were 'rough conditions' for the rescue?? I've scuba dived from a small RHIB in rougher conditions, and got back on board without incident, it wasn't exactly fun to be honest, but no-one on board at the time described it as rough. Regarding the emergency flotation devices, aren't they mostly inflated by a small co2 cartridge, activated by a super simple to operate, blatantly obvious pull toggle? It's not like they are likely to fail, even if old, unless some idiot had previously fired a cartridge and not replaced it. They shouldn't have even been trying to inflate them anyway while still inside the boat, it was too confined to have everyone trying to move about, even stay seated, wearing inflated flotation devices, they don't inflate them inside a ditched aircraft for the same reason.
All that commotion, splashing, shouting on the surface made by 48 panicking people. That is 100% a scenario I fear. Any sharks in the area would be curious…
I'd be happy with the captain, the water in the cabin is minimal, so get us as close to shots. We can evacuate the vessel if it gets a bit worse. Same time I'd be worried the fibre glass didn't crack more if we did go at speed. His debut decision worked, so thumbs up
Not sure about an engine room flooding. The pictures you show, shows a number of outboard motors.
In the late 70s friends and I were on the Blythe River in a new to my friend a 5 passenger speed boat that had a tunnel type hull with a 125 Mercury outboard, as we stopped to switch skiers and we started taking on water but it was going down at the back, I yelled at the driver he started the engine and hit the gas as I tried to get to the drain plug. I could not but the water was going out some how but only as long we were going 20mph or faster. every time we slowed down to pick up the skier it started sinking fast at the back with the motor nearly under water. So, all the commotion brought another boat to get the skier out of the river so we could keep moving fast back to the boat ramp. After all that and it was on the trailer we saw the big crack along one side of the tunnel hull.
That forward motion kept the water sucked out, I am wondering if this ferry boat crew may have been trying to do the same thing. Maybe they found that slowing down made it worse.
So they kept going until they had to stop. It would be interesting to find out.
A planing or semi planing hulled boat depending on the damage to the hull often will stay afloat longer if keep on plane especially if the dame to the hull is towards the bow of the boat. Since I don’t know if how the hull was compromised I will not say if the Captain of the boat was correct in his decision but I will defer to it since he was there until facts prove that his decision was the incorrect one. That said I will say life vests etc should have been distributed as soon as the hull damage was discovered and it was apparent that they were not going to make it to shore.
I don’t see any lifeboat?
Looks like their PFDs inflated after they hit the water, if not before.
a boat like this subtracts from the earths wealth…it simply creates scarcity of the materials it took to build it….its called opportunity lost…it probably will not pick up a beer can. just a retreat for a bunch of theorists. study of pollution is not needed its people that break a sweat and pick shit up.
