1. FYI ORIGINALLY POSTED IN 2023. This was originally broadcast on 26 December 2023. We recognise that Elon Musk has become far more divisive since this video was recorded, but the comments remain true, that we don't want to get into politics, and the technology is still sound.

2. When I served in the RN, in the 80's, we had SCOT (Sat Com Onboard Terminal). We had 2 antenna (port and starboard). They constantly lost signal and had to be manually adjusted to get back on track. 2 little wheels to rotate the antenna vertically and horizontally. On the wall next to the terminal was a hammer with a label (SCOT fine tuning tool).

3. I guess there is a risk that you become dependant on StarLink for comms and TV etc. I must be easy to switch it off. You always see in these kind of Apocalyptic movies where they have to revert to using good old HF radio and dare I say it … morse code!

I suspect that more and more yacht owners will be opting for using multiple starlink systems in conjunction with a VPN in place of sat tv receivers in order to increase bandwidth in order to be able to set up different tiers of secured wifi bandwidth on board, this still won't stop bandwidth throttling in high use situations such as Monoco during a F1 event but during voyages in should help, with 3 starlink systems and 3 cheap routers it would give you the ability to set up 9 different secured wifi channels on a vessel

5. We are using Starlink on our 60 m explorer and it is fantastic. Great for crew and owner. We can do the same staff as at home. Only in Turkey did not work for some political reason. But from Med to Scotland and in the middle of the ocean also with strong wave it is a game changer. Now we have still 3 antennas domes but empty… I will immagine a future with very different mast layout!

24. I agree you can separate someone’s work from their politics or personal behavior, but only to a point. There is a line and once crossed you can no longer separate the two. Elon may not have done anything to negatively affect your personal life, but he has done so to hundreds of thousands or millions of others. He may not have tried to intervene in UK politics…..yet, as he did US and Germany but that doesn’t mean he won’t in the future. If he does there’s a good chance you won’t like what he supports like the agenda he pushed in Germany. Cruise supports the leader of the COS who is viscous in his treatment of anyone that gets in his way inside the church and outside. Once you learn about the churches sinister policies and Cruises full throated support of the church it becomes hard to separate the two.

25. Any old satellite communication companies that have gone out of business or have started making huge losses? Or are people keeping the old systems while they use the new too? Does Starlink work in the middle of the ocean yet?

    Edit: At least at first you had to be within reach of a ground station with one bounce off the satellite, so maybe 800 km? Maybe the laser links between satellites are working well now so you are never out of range of a ground station?

26. Great channel. However, Elon Musk is a world class narcissist, and that's all he is. He didn't invent anything. Just like Thomas Edison and Bill Gates, he knows how to steal other people's ideas and market the hell out of them, manipulating human beings is his main skill. That's what narcissists do, manipulate people to maximize their own fame, to maximize their legions of flying monkeys. All those spacecraft ideas that Elmo "invented" were in Popular Mechanics and Scientific American thirty years ago, but NASA couldn't pull them together because the engineers and scientist who work at NASA never had any idea how to manipulate politicians, billionaires, or the general public to get what they want.

28. One issue with "streaming" over the Internet is geolocation issues. Residential Starlink say they provide an IP that should geolocate to country of billing address, but not necesarily same state/province. Not sure about marine plans because you may have a billing address in the UK, but if you are in south america, you may get an IP address that geolocates to south america, and your UK streaming service won't let you watch videos it only has rights to show within the UK. And when in middle of ocean, it is less predictable because the satellite overhead could be talking to satellites in a path to reach a base station in any of tthe continents around the Atlantic.

30. In canada, towns such as Grise Fiord at 76° latitude still have views of geostationary/equatorial satellites and the elevation there is about 5.3° (svalbard is actually north of that at 78.577. But at those latitudes, you need either a dish on top of a hill or a satellite that is nearly same longitutude as you to "see". A satelite comfortably visible at Grise Fiord (76, -82) with 5.3° will be at -7.7° at Svalbard which is 78, +15 because it also needs to look westward.
    The other aspect that is more important is the atmosphere. When at equator, you go through 100km of atmosphere and perpendicular to thin layer of clouds. In the north or antarctic, at a 5° elevation, you will travel diagonally through clouds and thus much thicker layer and the signal will be much mroe reduced and more effected by rain which may be happening very far from where you are. This is why he satellite dishes in northern communities are far bigger.
    Initial batch of Starlknks and most of them today do not serve regions north of about 55° latitude, but at one poimt they started to launch near polar orbits for a limited set of satellites so you do have service now in northern regions but if there is no visible base station, that satellite need to relay to the satellite ahead of behid until it reaches a satellite that has a view over a base station.

33. Yes, this Video has been really interesting & enlightening. I've loved your 'rambling on' about this subject in particular, though I like all your coverage videos.
    I found you because of the Bayesian sinking. A Podcast is a great idea where you can get into more depth on subjects and technicalities. My Dad was an engineer. He began as a ship's 3rd Engineer though after his first voyage he discovered he could never overcome seasickness so had to leave the sea. I must have inherited his genes on both counts.
