A conversation with a maritime lawyer would be of great interest.
Gentlemanlike
This yacht steal8ng bussines might have people think twice about buying one. And why would another buyer buy the stolen yacht? Next crisis it will be stolen from him as well.
How do we get ahold of the “sanctions list”?
Hi david love your chanel, please i would love it if you could get a maritime lawyer on i would love to hear what his/her thoughts on this is.
Brilliant video. Thank you N&J!!
Thanks for your hints on next season! 🙂
Thank you for another very informative Video David. In regards to those new mega/super Yacht commissions presently in build for intended Russian Clients: agreed, a dilemma for shipbuilders however I should imagine the Build if more than halfway to completion will continue as normal notwithstanding staged non-payments. The new build Yacht remain the property of the shipbuilder until completion, the staged payments paid by the commissioning client could potentially be ring-fenced and therefore frozen on escrow.
Hello David. Can you please give us an update on Ragnar. A very important underwater internet cable in a tiny Island in Norway called Svalbard was cut. You can google"internet cable cut in Sbalbard". The rumor is that it was done by Ragnar, that is why it was detained, it's a bit suspicious that it was up there at the time. I heard this in a interview with Dr Pippa Malmgen who was a former advisor to George Bush.
That was very good information. To hear a maritime lawyer discuss this would be interesting. Many thanks David.
Yes, I defo would like to hear a Maritime Lawyer speak … thank you
It's sad many legitimately good Russian people are being discriminated against for one man's tyranny they have nothing to do with.
We are in Maldives now and can see quite a few of these Super Yachts…
Concur w majority of commenters thus far, thoughtful, sensitive and informative vid. Thx, keep ‘em coming please!
I have all ways been very interested in your sector ? And I think what is happening is not a bad thing The dirty money will be cleaned out of the sector and the sector may be a lot better for it Good will come from this give it time
Tactfully worded and the whole issue very carefully navigated, but for the remark at 05:19 I have to say is wrong …I don't think we do all want a quick resolution "for people who are dying on both sides of the conflict" – we want a quick resolution for the people of Ukraine who are under attack and that's all that needs to be said.
Half of all involved are innocent people and an army forced to defend their country from an illegal invasion (I am very glad you called this what it is – an invasion and not a "war"); the other side in all of this are the invading forces who are de facto aggressors. We mustn't sympathise with such people and I don't think that view can be rationalised at this moment in time.
I understand a LOT of Russian money sustains the industry (one should be careful when biting the hand that feeds them, I understand that too!) but surely neither you, nor Northrop & Johnson sympathises with anyone on the Russian side in all of this.
Its always been known that Russian money is largely questionable and these people have gained there wealth through corrupt methods. Suddenly having a conscious about it seems double standards.
Thank you David. Interesting and informative. Good luck to all of us in this nice industry.
It would be interested to know what maritime and international lawyers, legal opinion on how the conflict in Ukraine will affect first the European leisure marine industry, then the leisure and private marine industry in North, Central and South America too?
Or the leisure private marine industry, in the India Ocean and the South China Seas, or in the North or South Pacific Ocean, as well as the explorer yacht industry in the Southern Ocean and the Arctic Ocean, will they all be affected differently?
Though will the fall out of international sanctions on Russia, not just affect the super yachts industry only, whether sailing super yachts or motor super yachts?
Or will the global fall out of sanctions, the longer they go on, will they go down the marine leisure industry as a whole, to the likes of RIB and yacht tender manufacturers, or even servicing and maintenance boatyards, as well as to the marine support industries, or marine system or parts industries being affect too?
Or yacht manufacturers and brokage industry, which deals with smaller sized sailing and motor yachts (upto 15m), or the medium size (upto 30m) sailing and motor yachts, both being equally affected as much of the super yachts (over 30m upto 200m in size).
Or will we see a down sizing in all types of sailing and motor yachts, or a move to buy more older classic yacht on the second hand market instead too.
Let alone see major changes in yacht crew hiring and Charter Yacht industry, will there be less jobs available or more people going after fewer positions too?
As the conflict in Ukraine, has to have a fallout on the marine leisure industry, as much as there will be a fallout on both the luxury car industry, you already seeing some luxury car companies pulling out of the Ruusian amarket.
As well as on the western private VIP and executive turboprop and turbofan aircraft manufacturers, plus turboprop business helicopter industries and aviation charter and brokage industries being affected too?
As well as the international luxury property industry, could or is already being affected by international sanctions on Russian Millionaires and Billionaires too!
That the luxury yacht, aviation, cars and property industries, could all see a turn down in business, the longer the illegal Wall on Ukraine goes on by President Putin and Russia.
Lastly what will happen to President Putin's own Super Yacht, will it be trapped in Russian Port or Russian territorial water in the Baltic, fearing to go anywhere?
In case the Western Nations, or their navies, or their coastguards and/or law enforcement agencies, are ordered to stop Putin's Super Yacht if it dares to go into international waters, or pass through other countries territorial waters.
So European Nations can or would seize or take Putin's own vessel into custody, as part of international sanctions too?
Because President Putin, did move his own Super Yacht, into safe Russian waters and port in the Batlic, before invading Ukraine, even if he did not warn his fellow Russian Super Yacht owners to do likewise.
Which may have not of made Putin many friends now, with their Super Yachts having been seized or will soon will be taken into custody, by Western Powers, and other running in hope their Super Yachts won't be taken too!
The problem is not when this war will stop it's about whether it will get out of control to a full world war! Russia has been cut off BUT putin has not stopped from shutting them out of the world that won't stop him! Sadly what will? Hope everyone is safe and god bless you all! 🙏💙
Been a sub since 25K, understand the need for no politics, but also understand that sometimes you needs the minerals! Sorry david, weak tea! Un-subbed!
All I know is if these all the guards don't get their yachts back the Mega yacht and giga yacht market is going to be flooded with 2nd hand high quality yachts AKA you might be able to pick up a giga yacht for a Mega yacht price
1st you ought to come to mind LA dacha made by is made by Damon yachts
The bigger question is are we in the early days of World War 3 and nobody talks about what happened to the boating and yachts industry during the 2nd World War and I'm talking about people who own the odds in the boat a lot of them were destroyed due to fighting also can recall a few ocean liners that have been destroyed due to fighting
I'm glad you did address some of it I wanted to know how the cooperation I worked for feels about the Russian invasion I'm at North of Grumman Newport News shipbuilding and dry dock company
Bear in mind that these videos are all about making money, Adsense primarily, then it moves on to N J advertising, after that is the channel owners wish to sell you a boat. When it comes to Russians older people will have better memories of the country that has been the bad neighbour of the world since time began. The war at the moment will never end, it will smoulder forever and Russians will continue to be the bad neighbour. All people should avoid anything with Russia, do not go, do not buy, do not travel and that includes using any Russian owned vessel for charter. If not all Russians are bad then they should all return to their country and use their own power to change for the better and not spread themselves all over the Planet ducking and diving.
If you do get ahold of a lawyer, my question would be this: Can a country that is sanctioning these individuals, send their Navy out to intercept these boats on the open ocean?
I would like to have my very own super yacht?
Yes I think it would be an interesting conversation
What would a company like Lürsen and doBeing the fact that towbar is stuck in one of their drydocks how are they going to repair other yards or even build new yards when they have no way to do that
These sanctions will go on way past the end of fighting in the Ukrainian. If Russia loses or ends up occupying parts of Ukrainian soil. Their will probably reparations that Ukrainians will insist on. The west could us sanction assets for this purpose. This has been done in the past. Russia is in a no win situation as far as foreign investments.
Hi David,
What if one was about to purchase a yacht owned by a suspected Russian owner, would that purchase be permitted or not or could the new owner face sanction because of the purchase…?
You could ask the lawyer the implications of and why a yacht would fall under one of these 3 categories– Seized yachts vs Frozen yachts vs Arrested yachts. And furthermore I think that for a long time now, before chartering a yacht people will demand to know more about the owner.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXIgn_jUzw4
All of this seems all too fishy given all the other info that’s been coming out. Ukraine must be a key asset to the current powers that they are taking these measures.
Dear David, It has been a few weeks now and with a cooler head one should actually question if seizing those yachts is actually hurting the West more than Russia. Yes there is the publicity effect as yachts are an easy target for that. But that said we all know a yacht is constantly bleeding out the bank account/s of the owner. And where does the majority of those money go? Maintenance, annual dry docking, docking fees, crew, supplies from clothing to cleaning material to food etc. with the vast majority ( if not 100%) of those not being Russian. On top we have the brokers, lawyers, insurers etc. So with about a month now since it started what effect do you see this is having on the industry? I also asked on a previous comment if there is a way for someone to have such assets protected no matter what and if this move has 1st. Scared owners or potential owners and 2nd if we will see a move from ownership to chartering. Thank you very much! Gabriel Ps: In my humble opinion these move has no practical effect and we have just shot our own foot.
Great and very important video David.
It would be easy to ignore the situation and keep doing sales and walkthrough videos, but this video not only acknowledges what is going on and the effect on your industry but also a warning/word of caution to other members of the industry that have found themselves caught in the middle and can easily be caught out.
A video with a maritime lawyer would be very interesting, especially with the issue with insurance validity now.
Very poor taste! 😢
Quick resolution… let's see…it does not appear to be the case! Quite the contrary as more and more russian yachts are being seized. Moreover decision to sell these yachts and give the proceeds to Ukraine for reconstruction, is being discussed. If true, surely the supe yacht market is going to sink. Who is going to buy these yachts?
As someone who's part Ukrainian it warms my heart that the Russian military budget was pretty much blown on wealthy Russians buying Yachts and not buying weapons of war.
@8:20 "No good fortune is made honestly."
I don't understand how everyone in the USA have not been sanctioned. For their wars, all trade with the USA should have been stopped. To much bias.
Is Hard to get Job as Deckhand on yatch. Does there is future if yatching industry.
