Racing yachts of today and just big open skiffs. It must be a real pain to do a three day race in one. In 1974 I was navigator on a Jock Muir timber cutter called Trevassa. We won the Flinders Island and Bird Island races on handicap. We also had a crew of only 6 including a cook and me as Navigator. There was no GPS and no electronic aids. It was charts and a bearing compass. We had three hot fresh cooked meals a day, and if the weather turned nasty, we just powered through it at a steady 10 knots. The last yacht that combined civilised conditions and was fast was Love and War. We should change the current handicap rules so that classic yachts are still competitive.
