  1. Well done Christina, you got the full album version instead of the shortened version often played on the radio. This song is also the best introduction to the band, imo. If you're interested in more by Styx, I highly recommend 'Renegade' and 'Suite Madam Blue' and there are many more great ones after that!

  2. My favorite song from Styx from a repertoire-stockpile of Gems!
Saw them this past summer '25, though only a couple of the original members, Awesome show! Musicianship, sound, video, & production – Great!
Its all passing away slowly & gracefully – Catch 'em while you can..
    Loved the review Christina ❤

  3. Come Sail Away was released in 1977 Grand Illusion Album , Mr. Roboto was 1983 Kilroy Was Here Album.
I was in my early teens when STYX 1st album was released back in the early 1970's. Yes the main vocals is the same in both songs. (Dennis De Young) The back ups are James Young, Tommy Shaw and Chuck Panozzo.
The Paradise Theatre Album was laser etched and had a blue/purple translucent. A small light aimed at the record would show a kaleidoscope on the ceiling or wall. (Note Theatre is spelled correct according to the Album cover in Australia)
I had all Albums but they were stolen due to a break-in.
If you really want to see a LIVE concert 'Styx – Caught in the Act. Live and More 1983' on Youtube.

  4. This was their closing song for their Paradise Theater tour. I loved it because words would spin on a darkened screen displaying their whole roadie crew. How many bands have ever given that respect/credit.

  5. Hi Christina,

Yes, Christina, that is Dennis DeYoung singing the lead vocal on ‘𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝘆’!

The song, ‘𝗠𝗿. 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗼’ is from the album, 𝙆𝙞𝙡𝙧𝙤𝙮 𝙒𝙖𝙨 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚, by Styx, and was released as the lead single on February 11, 1983, and the album was released on February 22, 1983.

Dennis DeYoung, a founding member of the rock band Styx, served as its primary co-lead vocalist and keyboardist from 1972 to 1999. DeYoung was the band’s most prolific and successful writer, having been credited as the writer of more Styx songs than any other band member. DeYoung penned seven of the band’s eight 𝘽𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙗𝙤𝙖𝙧𝙙 Hot 100, Top 10 singles, as well as a solo Top 10 single.

The other two songwriters in the classic Styx lineup are:
James ‘JY’ Young – vocals, guitars, additional keyboards on ‘𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝘆’, and Tommy Shaw – vocals, guitars.

As for guitars, co-lead guitarist, James ‘JY’ Young, played the brighter-sounding Fender Stratocaster with an upper midrange emphasis tonality, while Tommy Shaw favoured a thicker-sounding Gibson Les Paul Custom with its lower midrange emphasis timbre.

𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙄𝙇𝙇𝙐𝙎𝙄𝙊𝙉 is the seventh studio album by the American rock band Styx. It was recorded at Paragon Recording Studios in Chicago and produced by the band.

    If you are into numerology…

FUN FACT: The album was released on July 7, 1977, by A&M Records, which intentionally chose the combination of
(7th on 7-7-77) for good luck. LOL! 💿🎰🧧🍀🤞🏻

When 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙄𝙇𝙇𝙐𝙎𝙄𝙊𝙉 dropped, it became a worldwide sensation, selling three million copies in the U.S. alone, earning Triple Platinum status. Overall, sales are estimated at over six million copies. The album catapulted the band to superstardom and produced hit singles like ‘Come Sail Away’ and ‘Fooling Yourself’. The title track, ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻’, got plenty of FM radio play and remains a classic rock staple, even though it was never officially released as a single, and it is my favourite Styx song!
    💫🌀🤩

Another hard-rocking song on the album that I love is ‘Miss America’, written and sung by James ‘JY’ Young, who also played lead guitar on the track. It is a scathing (yet hilarious!) diatribe on beauty pageants and the crowning of the new Miss America.

I laugh hysterically because my wife was involved as a contestant in many local beauty pageants when she was a model. This was all before we met. She said the women all had fake boobs, wore too much makeup, and that the contests were all rigged. 🤣

    I wasn’t kidding when I said I married a real-life Barbie! 💓👱🏼‍♀💞

𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙄𝙇𝙇𝙐𝙎𝙄𝙊𝙉 by Styx should be listened to in its entirety, as this is a true concept album. It is such a creative, dynamic, vivid, and powerful-sounding performance and production!!

As for the song, ‘𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝘆’, here is the backstory:

After returning home to Chicago from a family holiday in the Hawaiian Islands, Dennis DeYoung began composing ‘Come Sail Away’ in January 1977, during a massive blizzard that brought unusually heavy snowfall to Chicago and much of the U.S. Upper Midwest. The song was inspired by a mix of the storm, fresh memories of Hawaii’s stunning island paradise, and a touch of outer space sci-fi.

I recall seeing people shovelling snow and piling it up high, six feet or more on the tree lawns, as I was with my family visiting friends in the U.S. Midwest in January 1977. For me, the winter of 1977 brought more snow than I had ever seen in my life!

    And speaking of snow…

Christina, if you like winter sports, then there’s no finer place in the U.S. than Aspen, Colorado, this time of year!

    Back to the music:

The title song, ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻’ is a song written by Dennis DeYoung, released as the title track of Styx’s 1977 album of the same name. Serving as the thematic centrepiece for the entire record, it wasn’t issued as a commercial single but has enjoyed, and continues to enjoy, substantial airplay on classic rock radio.

As for the fine rhythm section of Styx, we have the brothers Chuck Panozzo on bass and the late John Panozzo on drums and percussion.

Christina, the brothers Chuck and John Panozzo are among the very best rhythm sections in all of rock music. I cannot praise them enough! In fact, these two siblings are so good, they bring me to tears—of joy! And especially on the title song, ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻’ from the album of the same name. Like OMG! LOL!!

On ‘𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝘆’, the flute and string sounds were composed and played by Dennis DeYoung on an ARP String Ensemble synthesiser and possibly a Minimoog synth for the flute-like sounds.

This is where I get emotional:

    [Pre-Chorus]
    A gathering of angels
    Appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope
And this is what they said

    [Chorus]
They said, ‘Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me, lads
Come sail away, come sail away
    Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me, babe
Come sail away, come sail away
    Come sail away with me’

    [Instrumental Break]
    [Keyboard Solo]
    [Guitar Solo]

    [Pre-Chorus]
I thought that they were angels
    But to my surprise
    We climbed aboard their starship
    We headed for the skies…

This reminds me of some words of inspiration that broadcaster and longtime host of the Top 40 countdown radio show, 𝘼𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙏𝙤𝙥 40, the late Casey Kasem (April 27, 1932 – June 15, 2014), used to sign off with:

‘Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars’ 🤩💫🌠🌟✨

Finally, Christina, you really should listen to the whole album.

I give 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙄𝙇𝙇𝙐𝙎𝙄𝙊𝙉 my highest recommendation! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you, Christina, for reading my comments and for reacting to ‘𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝘆’ by Styx. 🌜🛸🪐

P.S. We pronounce Baroque as in Barack Obama, and Renaissance as in our oldest daughter’s middle name, Amanda Renée.

P.P.S. I’m so sorry your reaction to David Gilmour was removed (along with my comments) on Tuesday, 16 December, last week.
I’ll repost my comments in another post.

  6. Nice Reaction! About 7 years ago, Tommy Shaw, one of Styx's guitar players, did a show with The Contemporary Youth Orchestra where they sang Styx songs. It was really amazing listening to their songs played with an Orchestra and the young musicians were awesome. They even had their Choir there for backgroung vocals

  7. Dennis DeYoung IS Styx. Vocalist, songwriter, accordian turned piano player. Theres a video of Dennis DeYoung singing the music of Styx with his band from 2014 and his voice was still unbelievable and he did not use autotune and never would.
Autotune was released in 1997 and since 2005, it has been destroying real music. Anyone can be a singer now due to technology.

  8. Finally I found out from the reactions below that you're acting to the real longer version sweetie the entire Grand illusion album is fire you should go to the first song and react to everyone on it

  9. Sweetie the best material they did was from 1980 on down I could name great songs by them all day long do I wish sometimes beautiful that I can actually talk to reactors with the phone instead of typing cuz what they don't realize is that I have got more knowledge about more genres of music than anyone I've ever known have you forgotten more than most people know what happens when you grow up in a musical family and you were a musical major vocal performance major in college

  10. Sweetie Styxs happen to have three guys that could do lead vocals and a fourth one that did once and the 70s compared to the time when Mr roboto came out was Ray rockier better music and yes beautiful I've seen them live more than once and I love the fact that you're actually a train musician cuz I understand what you're talking about cuz I am also but my instrument of choice was voice and yes when healthy I had a for active range base in to soprano

  11. And yes will my voice is healthy I've sung this song got standing ovations for it doing it at karaoke places yes I can sing as high as Dennis DeYoung I can do some of the songs by Queen

  12. John Panozzo drums RIP Chuck Panozzo Bass Dennis DeYoung piano lead vocals Tommy Shaw lead rhythm guitars lead vocals J Y Yong lead guitars vocals what's the most successful lineup of the band

  13. This was, for a period, my favorite album when it was released. That is the album, as a whole. "Castle Walls" was probably my favorite track. But, having said that, I always listened to it in the context of the LP. In particular, it's practically inseparable from "Man in the Wilderness", which precedes it. It's surprisingly cohesive to have been credited to multiple writers.

  14. "Lady" must be the next Styx song reaction. Dennis DeYoung wrote, and recorded Lady in 1972 as a tribute to his wife Suzanne. Although it was released in 73, didn't become a hit until 1975. Its the first massive hit Styx had.
Dennis DeYoung also wrote their hit "Babe" (1979) for his wife.
Dennis and Suzanne (his HS sweetheart) have been married since 1970…55 years now. Dennis is 78 but he first formed the band that would become Styx at age 15 with his neighborhood friends, the Ponozo brothers. Dennis had 2 differemt guitar players before JY was hored in 1972 when he decided to change the band name from Tradewind to Styx. Tommy Shaw auditioned and was hired in Dec 1975.

  15. I'm sure I'm duplicating things, I didn't read the 450 comments you got in the last day. But, yes, Dennis DeYoung (lead singer, pianist, synths on here) was a broadway style singer, wanted to write musicals, I think he did eventually write musicals. He was also the lead singer on Mr. Roboto. But, there were two other lead vocalists, Tommy Shaw (also guitar, guitar synths) and James Young (also guitar), and one of the Panozzo Brothers, I think Chuck, but the bass player, also did harmony vocals. A whole lot of overlap and availability of skills, and of vocal ranges (Tommy was the high harmony you mentioned, James and Chuck usually sang low harmonies).. One of those bands where you can hear two songs and think they're totally different bands, because there's a totally different lead vocalist, one was written to be guitar-centric, the next oriented to piano and keys. These guys were so underrated. Thanks for reviewing this.
