This is actually the most informational video I've seen so far (by a long shot). I have never sailed before, and I want to learn, as I will soon be buying a boat of my own. I don't know how to sail, and this video taught me more than anything else on YouTube. Thanks! A+
he didn't roll tack
this is the best training video on youtube:)
That kid hauls the mail! Kudos…
yea i know they suck and are actualy former soap boxes but im in the nz worlds team for them haha. im gona sail a 470 next whitch is way faster than some lazer shit
appreciate the post and efforts. thank you.
take care
God this brings back memories. I must have logged 10,000 hours in a pram when I was a kid.
Anyone who hates on beginners is a douchebag in denial. There isnt one thing you do in your life that you werent a beginner at when you started. Those who fail to recognize that fact are losers and the reason they lash out at others is to make up for their own shortcomings.
its called bearing off and heading up. luffing is when the sail starts to flap.
alot of this was innaccurate
that's a load of crap. i have been sailing for two decades. in fact, while i don't sail an omtimist pram, one of my boats has a sprit sail, like the optimist. what part of what is in this video is wrong? none of it. hell, the kid's a good sailor.
true. however, i take it they are not American. sailing terms may be slightly different in other countries. not sure about that, but the lessons in the video are good.
in fact, there are a number of ways to say the same thing. besring off is also called falling off. heading up is also called pointing up. just saying. also, luffing up is actually when you bring ther luff, the leading edge of the sail, into the wind. the sail just flaps around when the wind is equally on both sides of the sail. when you luff up, you turn your vessel into the wind which is what you do when pointing or heading up.
no im not talking about the sailor, im talking about the narrater, hes using some wrong terminology
i only find two wrong things. he confuses luffing up with pointing up and you do sail slower down wind.
haha i used to train with this guy:p
He should definitely sail a sunfish, if not a laser. He'd an amazing sailor!
I hate opi's they are basically a bathtub with a mast.
he is sailing laser std now
The video is extremely well done and the commentary is excellent as well. I can't think of any way this could be improved showing the basic maneuvers when sailing in this length of time. Although this is for beginners it’s obvious that this young lad is a seasoned racer. Thanks!
I did this just earlier today! (That's why i'm looking it up) I capsized twice, I find quick turns difficult. I am eleven by the way. But I am in a far bigger boat. But it does use the same motion!
I am 13 and managed, somehow, not to capsize, however I could not hold a position to get back to my house! XD
weirdo
whats the name/brand/model of the boat the kid is sailing?
its not OP its oppi say it like oppie, ok xD
Can I sail in my bathtub too?
sorry I laughed when I saw a oppie
Very helpful, thanks.
This video is old😳
o-py
yup that so not how you say it mate.
I capsized 😢
Was the cameraman drunk?????

I sail a Firebug, another 2.4 metre boat, one you can build yourself for half the cost of an Opti. It has buoyancy tanks making it easier to recover from a capsize and 50% more sail. It will plane carrying my 83 kg and after 14 years of competitive racing, well over 500 races, it only needs a lick of paint…

Optimist hulls looks like floating coffins. Fancy putting your kid in one.
