1. The reason for this episode is to point out (to those with little experience other than watching sailing channels) that living full-time on a sailboat is not all cocktails, parties and white sand beaches. This amazing lifestyle brings problems as well as the good times.
We've been living aboard full-time since 2006 and wouldn't have it any other way. If you watch till the end, you'll hear us say that.
The accompanying episode, "5 Reasons Why You Should Buy A Boat" explains why we love this life: https://youtu.be/NF4dvGuEip8

  2. But would you change back to a 3 bedroom semi after all the places you have visited and all the new friends you have met over the years. Work it out if you visited everywhere again by plane and the costs of hotels it all comes to a more realistic life.

  3. Thank you for being so honest. You two are so cute, and it must be true love that keeps you together.

I'm currently in the middle of it all as a cruiser on an older sailing vessel. Admittedly, I have never been so challenged my entire life, but I do try to enjoy every minute. A true adventure is what it is, and I never would have been able to imagine what I have already experienced in my wildest dreams. I am a motorhead, but under it all, I truly love sailing and sailboats.

Thank you for all of your presentations. I have watched many before and enjoy each and everyone. G.

  4. I thought as soon as you bought a boat you’d become a size 10 bronzed sugar babe and my hubby would become ripped tanned handy man. Life would become easy and we’d get 10,000 subscribers on Instagram and make an income as influencers!

  5. Yes…rats swim very well… I also should comment that successful marina ownwers are not uncommonly, multi millionaires. In Australia, a country renowned for selling out land, ports, industry, residential real estate, wineries, dairies huge grazing properties and so on to Chinese government and Chinese billionaires probably one of the most arrogant lot on the planet…matching Americans…has…to mention but one…a beautiful-outlook marina (Woolwich) recently sold to Chinese on a 44 year lease for $25 M. Rental income $750,000.00 p/a. A Chinese recently booted out of Australia, within months bought $3B of property in Mosman and Circular Quay. The government just ignores a Chinese airstrip in Western Australia. Instead it kids generation after generation about the quality and desirability of these and other 'investrors. They also encourage incompetent students to come to Australian University and TAFE to nefariously get started on a visa and now…absolutely absurdly…a citizenship after 5 year study so as to bring out their family and village. Your $2-20,000 spent annually on your boat is just peanuts so there is no price-control

All these people want money…and returns in kind. From where does the money come. Some comes from Barristers who's incomes are more substantial than their financial skills. Racehorses are commonly 'investments' for Barristers and Solicitors…and they are way over their heads on costs. Someone has to pay…which may mean selling your home or boat or other assets to pay them. Power boats more than sailing boats sit on Marinas where Barristers and Solicitors (adnd young 'old saltes' come to booze up with mates and clients. When shares up…we had plenty of work…when down they were rarely seen, cancelled works or just didn't pay. Dcades ago I was paid $15/hour as a specialist on a Marina…I then found that for every $15
and I earned as much as $1000/week…the owner of the Mariner pocketed $45.00…so you paid $60.00/hour plus markup fpr the pleasure of mooring there or using them for maintenance…with maybe inflated 'blue-book' hours. The 'commission' charged by boat brokers is staggering….while you are paying also for the mooring….however they commonly are paying rent to the marina owner.

Why mention it…because when owning boat one is set upon by two legged by 'sea-lice' To support the largesse and luxury of home-grown and imported $squillionaires boat owners have to pay….in huge mooring fees when at marina, annual inspection costs, damage and theft, incompetent and yahoo louts on power boats jet ski and other yachts. Insurance companies exist for two reasons….to make a profit from NOT paying claims, to invest our cash in other businesses and shares, Warren Buffett learned that and bought-up insurance companies afloat on cash he could invest as he wished

Ship chandlery is a massively profitable enterprise. Sailing courses are very expensive. "All Is Lost" in which Redford was his usual boring self, he crashed into a container…hundreds of containers are 'overboard around the ocean…some just below the surface. Do you have a seaworthy dinghy…they are more expensive commonly than the cheaper keelboat. How long do you think your chinese crap rubber dinghy will last…even without a great-white tasting it…?..on its way to you?. Is what you tow behind at coast or bluewater useful for much more than a calm inland waterway? How much must one spend to own a boat…or more relevantly, maintain that ownership and then maintain it. Is it worthwhile renting a boat for day of tw0…maybe…and maybe that's a subject our two educators can broach. Voila

  6. And there you go the finally comment is true, one good trip all is forgiven. We brought a 50' liveaboard yach
t going on 3 years now, In short do as much of your own work as possible you will save thousands. In Australia sadly most marine trades people are useless. Doing your own work allows you to set things the way you want.. fortunately I have been able to do all my own work electrical, navigation, plumbing, manage my own engine rebuild heat exchanges to suit my self. It has paid off huge. Do your own research ask lots of question. Youtube is a great place to learn.

  7. I have a friend who brought a second-hand 45 ft boat in immaculate condition it was near new, He is sailing from Greece to Australia very slowly, it's been four years now, and every email or journey update bar none includes stuff that has gone wrong, endless expense. He loves what he is doing but he has the income to do it. Budget sailing, forget it, these kind people are giving out priceless information.

  8. There are no reasons not to buy a boat. A boat is a life style that you must choose, accept and no complain. True lots of work to maintain a boat but this is the lifestyle, it brings you a good knowledge of being autonomous. Ants or cockroaches not a problem at all if your boat is well maintained and apply proper pesticides pills. A 12 volt car vacccum does an excellent job onboard. If you don't want to spend money every time invest on diesel electric hybrid motors. The engines are maintenance free and the diesel generator is same as a home generator. A well planned plumbing and electrical setting last for over 5 years. If you have a proper desalination onboard fresh isn't a problem at all. There are also hand powered high pressure water desalination. I believe owning a boat comes with knowledge not just money. An experienced skipper should be able to do the maintenance of his boat from A-Z without others help or complaining. Again being at sea is a life style that we have chosen not forced to so why complain? Clothes not a problem at all. Choose the fabric of your clothes properly. Plastic and nylon works best. Easy washing and fast drying. Every day clean clothes. Wearing makeup onboard????? Are you trying to impress the waves? Beauty is nature. My wife doesn't use makeup at all not even on land.
Some good advice for long range sailors.
    1. A high pressure desalination hand pump as backup.
    2. A magnifier to start a fire in case no other option is available.
    3. Invest in a small electric engine as back, wind generator, solar panels, a good waterproof battery bank and a small diesel generator that can work with your electric engine.
    4. Dry suits for thermal protection and flotation.
    5. Canned food supply
    6. A stormproof life raft.
    7. A solar or mechanical recharged torch which is waterproof.
    8. Hooks, lines and artificial baits for survival.

Note: boats don't create problems in a couple, people do

  9. Yeah but if you are full-time cruiser, what else do you have to do with your time? Fixing stuff is what I do in my land house all the time.

  10. I completely agree. I worked as a service engineer for Caterpillar Marine and Industrial Engine division. Quite often I met a lot of boat owners in the midst of a crisis and I had great joy fixing their problems and saved their almost ruined sailing or motoring holiday. So here is my advice, Become a real good mechanic, put a caterpillar or a Volvo Penta engine in your boat , be a good electrician, if you are buying a new boat ask the company if you can spend six months during the installation and commissioning of all the components from third party. Make sure you have the electronic technician software troubleshooting manuals and software programs to monitor and troubleshoot. If you have a woman onboard , teach her these skills as well so you both make a great team. problems always starts with a woman…. Ask Adam He will agree… He was fine until the woman come along……Know your roles and your orbits….. If the Moon said it wanted to be the Sun and invaded the orbit of the sun…. You have a universal disaster….. Even planets know to stay in their orbits… Man and Woman should respect and understand orbits.

  11. Oh yes, Thurston. Let's be good humans and remind the poors why they might have to actually (gulp) get their hands dirty…to maintain this charade. 🤌

  12. great video thanks !! made a good decision to forget about selling my gorgeous villa and pour another drink from the bar and relax poolside ……… book a cruise instead

  13. My husband and I are former boat owners. Enjoyed our cabin cruiser boat for 4 years but did not live on it. Money pit!! Could not wait to sell it. Boat ownership is not for middle class people. Had it sell it before the boat cleaned us out.

  14. Do Not Buy or do business with Tomcat Boats (Sailing catamarans) Newmarket Ontario Canada, also goes under the Shell Company name Encore Marine. The owner Tom Strain is a Criminal who stole my money and Destroyed my boat. Impossible to get a response from him. Behaves like the classic Shady Contractor or bad car mechanic Shop.

  15. Yes owning a live aboard boat is money absorbing but the places you go to and the people you meet are worth every penny .
We've been on board our yacht for 20 years and wouldn't change it .

  16. Thanks for your advice! I am retired military, and was considering buying a live aboard yacht. After talking with boat owners, and watching UTube channels on boat ownership. I decided against it. I can always just rent a boat!

  17. My boat would be double keeled. As they do not need a slipway. Ok living with another usually opposite sex is tricky. I may sail slower but collisions should be superficial. Yes ongoing maintenance is the biggest issue.

  18. Boric acid … goodbye roaches (ants and tiny critters, if overwhelmed, mix with bit of sugar, they will all die). Rats…very smart and very persistent, rats cannot abide certain coffee grounds, oregano, cayenne and pepper (mint, garlic, lavender, basil and thyme). Love affair with cheese, milk, any meat product and most any veg. Clean with pine oil, turpentine, cloves and vinegar. Boats with cleaning tricks make happy love nests, bags!! Bag utensils keep special grab bags for top deck and bags for cabin. Make a habit of mixing own formula for kitchen (like mint? Like clove? Like rosemary…not only clean but repels rodents, mice and roaches. Buy pure h2o2 peroxide! in addition water makes much more effective cleaning – for $1k you can make a decent, not long lasting water maker, yes add carbon filters to your 5 and 20 micron house filter pack from the hardware store… – pressure pump but pressure washer pump do a great job in non-saline water and last at least year on high seas! Cleaning now is 20x easier. Likeee? Anybody can learn to tack weld, stuff marine putty in emergency hull holes, sew a rip sail, recover an anchor, and solder wires (not hard), test a fuse (really, electric on boat is vital so take very basic video tips … you can … Do It!) nobody mentions sick, ill and monthly attacks but that is a consideration. Keep monthly tea, herbs, heat pads and etc. in a Bag!! Don’t ever run short of toilet paper … ever. Just sayin’

  19. I'm a 1st time caller to your channel , I like you two …. it's always nice to see all the youtube beautiful couples with the mussels and boobs out all over the place and living the dream aboard a sailing boat, going this amazing place or that . They spin-it and get the hits on Youtube and the income generated, but don't present the real truth of what it's really like. 12 yrs of sailing this is solid advice born from hard yak doing it everyday . Boats and boating life is a love hate relationship , but when it's good OMG it's good and all the hard hard stressful yak falls away with those endless Sunrises / Sunsets most will never experience..

  20. Of course there is nothing to argue with here, dead on in fact. Maybe you missed one: you can lose everything you have in an hour.
My view now: you need to have a REASON to be on the sea, something more than "I want the experience". It seems to me that you need to accept a certain level of tough, primitive discomfort in order to KEEP IT SIMPLE. Almost everyone makes the mistake of requiring too many conveniences. An adventure is tough by definition, don't try to screw with that reality, that is contradictory.
The boat must pay for itself which means in this century, sadly and inevitably, tourists. Set yourself up to accept and enjoy the necessity of showing tourists a special experience. Make 'em pay and set out the rules: if you cant take a bit of a beating and a loose schedule stay in your hotel.
People who live on things like Wharrams seem to have a better time despite their lack of amenities; they are unusual and cool and exotic and they easily attract attention and customers. Fiberglass yachts not so much. If a Wharram and a white monohull rock up to a beach together people swim out to the Wharram.
And older men (the biggest demographic), my most important advice: do anything but become a skinny-legged alcoholic on a dirty boat at anchor, that is the fate of so many who don't have a plan.
