  1. Glad you're gonna finally get on your way. Praying for safe travels for you, just be careful and don't do anything stupid! Love ya!

  2. Well done for fixing your windvaine . Big well done to Danny very helpful guy a shame it did not work . I not a great fan of plastic parts . Go brittle after a wile . Safe trip boys and fair winds

  3. Good move waiting for genuine parts lads.👍👍 Danny was a nice guy for helping and now you have spare parts as well. Hope everything goes smooth from now on. Take care and thanks for sharing Panama. It's changed a lot since I sailed through there 40 years ago. Safe trip and see you on the other side.🙏🙏⛵

  4. Outstanding decision to get nappy fixed. Shout out to the guy in the machine shop, his heart was in the right place… Just imagine a failure in a storm… It wouldn't fail on a nice day, you both know that… Happy trails… Fair winds and following seas… See you in NZ…

  5. Well done lads. Another great episode. You will have to get an expanding tongs pot riveter at some point to handle those stainless rivets and especially the monel rivets which are preferable. Good luck with your trans pac. You two have more than enough milage now to get your Swallow tattoos done. Check it out on Google. 🐟 😁

  6. I stopped commenting so much on utube , because i have serious problems actually posting . I don't know what the problem is , but it appears a general thing , and not just confined to any one channel . I've tried a couple of times to you guys , but for some reason it won't upload , strangely though it will on another channel . I have a feeling it's a utube censorship issue , but i can't think why it's activating .
It's rather a shame , as this channel is turning into somewhat of an adventure , huh guys . However with that said , a good spot with the steering , it shows your pre-sail check is up to scratch . It looks like the plastic is breaking up , possibly due to the sun , catching it early is a really good move . You're gonna be navigating some quite large distances , possibly to some small islands , and any problems could make the difference between finding them or missing them completely . I'm not sure what the GPS coverage out there will be , and it will be interesting to find out , but personally i'd expect problems , you can't afford to have any errors . Personally speaking , i would have preferred the metal gears , but i can see your thoughts on trouble looming at the same time . The mix of alley and stainless , did have me a little concerned , but i think you took the right course of action in the end . The only difference i would have made , is the use of alley rivets . Stainless will definitely react to the alley support , i'm dealing with that on my motorhome right now . Strength would not have been an issue , as like you have , i would also have used multiple fixings too .

  7. Well done for spotting that! It seems strange that the manufacturers make such a critical part from such inadequate material.

  8. Aluminium and stainless steel bolts…bound to fail. But the way you solved it is brilliant!!. Just grease it well and it will last forever.
I am amazed that the cogs are plastic! Might be worth the trouble getting steel ones made in NZ or Aus? Hope you read this much later 'cause you'd be underway. Be safe.

  9. Bye-bye guys, been trying to watch as many past videos as I can. Give the machinist huge thank you, you do have backups.
I'll be watching for your next new videos. – rick

  10. (Lesson for today Sailing Brothers ) Definition of a "Screw" and a "Bolt" A Screw has a thread that runs the whole length of the shaft. A Bolt has a Threaded portion then a plain shank up to the head area the type of head makes NO Difference. My Apprenticeship in the Royal Air Force this was drummed into us constantly.

  11. Love you guys and sorry for the issues… best to carry spare parts, especially the obvious mechanical things that you depend on daily. Go through the boat and figure out what items sustain wear and tear from daily use and keep spares onboard. Watch out for the potential for galvanic corrosion between the rivets and the aluminum tube over time.

  12. Our direct drive auto pilot died 1000 miles from hiva oa, me and the wife had to hand steer for ten days changing over on shift every 2 hours, wasn’t fun but lost a lot of weight in the process.
    Good luck with your crossing

  13. Ps: you guys are an inspiration to all of us who sail older classics and not loaded with money. I wish you fair winds for the Pacific adventure !!

  14. It good of that guy to try and make your part even if it wasn’t quite right . Fingers crossed you get going . Will be waiting xx

  15. I know it's probably months ago that this happened, but I think you'd have been better off finding someone with a decent 3D printer for the replacement plastic component.
Also (yes, I'm a know it all after the event), it would have been better to get the guy to make you a new gear AND worm drive at the same time 🙂.
Anyway, take no notice of me, I'm a Sais married to a Carmarthen girl – so I already know I'm probably wrong about the gears!

  16. 😂 That lady was praying for you guys! She knew you didn't have a clue where you were going! When you're the only ones left on the bus and the sights out the windows are more and more dismal and disturbing, you know you've made a big mistake! If we don't see a video from you guys, it's because you're probably tied up in Pablo's basement!
Stay tuned to see if Luke and Adam have escaped or are they being forced into doing "donkey shows" in some dark, garbage filled alleys, by the cartels! Dun Dun Duuuun. 😱

  17. 12:47 not too fussy at all but I for sure would have tried to work with that guy to tighten up the tolerances. He could have done that easily I think and made the cog out of stainless possibly too. Keep all of that lubricated and I think it would be more reliable than the plastic. 18:40 the sheering strength of aluminum rivets is not the same as SS but that epoxy should help with that Personally, of course (LOL) I would have used a flexible compound to tighten up the looseness vs. epoxy which will make that a bear to service in the future…but I don't know much about it from this end. Thanks for the content and I hope you both are fairing well. Delays help us practice the patience needed to experience the full adventure.

  18. My sailomat wind vane just uses a pully with a line rapp😅ed twice around it,a simple system will work as its only for course setting

  19. Brothers!
This episode was a testament to your patience, desire to make the most of life and concern for others.
At 71, I've come to terms with my health, sailing abilities and equipment.
I am blessed with a loving wife who would probably risk my traveling fantasies, but I've focused on affordable land yachting for now.
We've done 3-4 4,000 mile Prius trips. At 240,000 miles, our 2010 toyota is willing, but welcomes (sometimes demands) a little TLC.
Like you, preventave maintenance, along with selective tools, bungee chords and a roll of color matched duct tape get loaded right after we check the air in the spare.
It helps us enjoy the sights putside the car, in stead of the drama inside 😊.
I look forward to hearing about your continued journeys.
I bet that lady was praying for all of us! Lord knows we need it .
    Best 2 ya!

  20. I think the engineer had the right idea. It just needed a little more work to mesh the threads. You’re apoxy solution will work well until you have the same issue. Removing it could be an absolute nightmare if the apoxy has adhered to both surfaces as it should. Anyhow your Chanel is probably the best sailing adventure on youtube you have such an honest delivery totally excellent quality well done both of you. It beats the h*ll out of stocking shelves 👍👍

  21. One problem with a bilge pump is if the float switch gets stuck in the on position it can kill your batteries before you know it, if you install one make sure you have in indicator light shows when the pump is pumping.

  22. Boys, you made the right decision to wait for original parts. I run a large engineering business and was horrified when I saw the aluminium and steel parts you had made. 100 % that would have failed. Have a great crossing guys. Love the channel, love the content.

  23. Another great video keeping us tensely awaiting the outcome of your repairs! Amazing solidarity to get you back on the water!
The risk with the stainless steel rivets is that they may become brittle, so if one snaps, assume the two others need changing as well!
Wishing you fair winds and a safe journey !
    😎

  24. The parts that came look like they were 3D printed. I wonder if you could have got them to send you the blueprint and then you could have got them 3D printed?

  25. Another great video guys, and I think you were right to wait for the right part – it is a long trip! From Cardiff Bay to the Pacific Ocean, the furthest the Welsh Navy has ever got! We are all really proud of you, fair winds and long may the Cheese last… 😉

  26. Well done guys for getting the wind vane fixed. I think you were right to be cautious about parts . When you are hundreds of miles from any land and things go wrong, it puts a great strain on yourselves . Good luck guys take care. 👍

  27. Disappointing, but lucky find. We had our windvane smashed in the same anchorage by an out of control APC boat and were devastated, but couldn't have happened in a better place in terms of getting it fixed. Have a great passage ⛵
