REGULA DE AUR a navigației | Ce sunt COLREGS-urile? | Sailing Ep 350

1. “I’m calm” 😂
As an ‘about to return to sea as a senior solo sailor’ I’ve been following your channel for some time and appreciate all the refresher course material. Love the common sense and honest approach to all you cover. From our responsibility to present ourselves in a professional manner to a port captains office to not letting an #!?*^~! Tanker captain know how you feel about him over ch16. You did refrain right?😉

  2. Jamie, I doth think you forgot about pecking order where like in the playground we being the smallest are the give way vessel. It is always the vessel with the least amount of maneuverability that is the stand on vessel. So yes if he was on a sailboat you could be properly pissed but not so much in what happen to you…

  3. You at the end answered the question as to why a freighter would run dark: pirates. Now I know. Thanks guys. Good talk as always.

  4. Presumably you did your 360º to allow the ferry to pass in front of you. How did you determine that he was not planning on passing behind you? My AIS shows the CPA but neither it nor my chart plotter shows the relative positions of the vessels as they pass.

  5. The golden rule of COLREGS is keep a watch and keep out of their way becaue they will run you over an keep steaming.

  6. Too many idiots, retards and F**k-ups at the wheel. How many of these A-Holes are reported and the sad, sick joke of the courts doing anything about it? 🤬🐻

  7. I know these things are known by all that need to know them, but they're worth saying anyway:- No matter which its the stand-on vessel and which is the give-way vessel, the onus to avoid collision remains with all parties involved. It is also often forgotten that the 'sail before motor' rule disappears as soon as a sailboat turns its engine on, thus becoming power driven. Even when under sail, a sailing vessel does not become the stand-on vessel if the other is a large vessel that is either constrained by draught or restricted in ability to manoeuvre. The other vessel should be showing appropriate day shapes or lights.

  8. Great topic! If I may be pedantic on the 'transit principle' to ascertain if you are on a collision course with another vessel, you need two factors to confirm that's the case: 1/ the relative bearing is unchanging, AND 2/ distance between the vessels is getting closer.

A common misconception people have is that just because a ship is much bigger than your little sailing boat, then you are automatically the one who must give way. Wrong. The COLREG rules talk about classes of vessels (motor, sail, fishing boat etc) and relative headings, but say nothing about relative size.

On many occasions I have stuck to my course while sailing as the stand on vessel, and had big cargo ships alter course by a nice 20 degrees or more to avoid me, as per the rules. Of course I only trust in them seeing me and changing course when there's perfect visibility and enough distance. If on the other hand, you are the stand on vessel but the give way vessel is not taking the necessary avoidance action, then the rules also say it's then your responsibility to do everything possible to avoid collision (which tends to become pretty instinctive anyway when that 100,000 ton ship obviously does not intend to change course and is bearing down on you 😂)

  9. I Had a Chinese Cargo Ship at night in the Malacca Straight Alter Course to Intercept our 40 ft sailboat , He was on our starboard Bow .
It look like he was trying to Ram us . I called him on 16 and Asked him his intention ,he said he would Cross our Bow for a Port to Port Pass.
I Maintained Course , Ready to turn Right , he Crossed our Bow only 300 Meters away . I think he was Practicing to see how close he could get !

  10. Jamie, did I see you having a puff on aft deck,! (Sorry ex smoker) anyway, perhaps because you are a sailboat you are held in the same disdain, as other local prows, no lights, I'm ex ships crew and I get pretty savage on east coast Aus where lots don't do right thing, so often its stbd to stbd with Motor boats esp those out of the Gold Coast Surfers Paradise.

  11. Hello, my darlings!
    Just watched your vlog!
It must be totally nerve-wracking having to watch out for 'ignorant' ships!
I would, however, love you to make a vlog about the absolutely disgusting plastic waste that you find in the sea😢
I've tried so often to persuade friends, etc, that our recycled waste doesn't necessarily end up being actually recycled, but is actually shipped off to 'foreign lands', who can't deal with it anymore!😢
Or have I totally misunderstood the situation?
    ❤❤❤
