  1. All diesel engines will have some blow by. Most of the time it’s not a problem. The oil being black can be multiple things. Some brands will blacken the oil more than others, also some oils will blacken worse than others due to the additive package that’s in the oil. Low rpm/idling can cause more blow by and sooting of the oil. Just change the oil and ride on. If you had bad blow by you would notice it.

  2. That did not look like a lot of blow by. I put my hand over the oil fill to feel the crankcase pressure. A little pressure is normal. Overall, this is not a precise test on the condition of the engine. It’s more of a catastrophic engine fail test, which does not look like the case on your engine. The next better test is to do a compression check, and the best is a leak down check. If you can get a compression test gauge, it will be useful to see how close the cylinders are to each other. I like to see less than 10% variation between cylinders. That would be the highest pressure minus the lowest pressure divided by the average. Doing the test is kind of a pain because you have to remove the injectors to get pressure gauge access to the cylinders. Then the fuel system needs to be bled after. But you will get a much better read on the state of the engine and a look at the state of the injectors. 😊

  3. Hey guys!! That new sail looks awesome! It gave me goosebumps going up Ha! It's so good to watch you two prepare for your crossing. So much stuff to go over. When was the last time a proper compression test was done on the diesel engine and how feasible is a compression test now? Could be telling. I like how you're editing in Calico Skies colors on your caption bars, classy 😙It's good you're getting a jump on these projects, as you know, spring will be here in no time. Good stuff. Be well my friends!!

  4. Do you plan on doing a head/valve job on the engine? The only other known thing might be piston rings. The least might be a need to use a striction treatment on the engine fuel.

  5. My name is Cheryl. I'm using my husband's phone, that's why his name comes over.

…no disrespect intended BUT…COULD you(speaking to the Captain) please stop talking so fast?. It's quite difficult to follow the video and it happens on every single video😢. Again, no disrespect intended. Good luck on your sailing adventures. Happy Holidays.

  6. Sails look brilliant. That crispy sound they make reminds me of hospital sheets eeeeeh.
I can see you, opposite Port Escondido, must be great to be on the water again.

  7. New sail–very exciting. I don't get sick of your channel. Can't say that for the majority. Thank you for being yourselves and working hard on your videos.

  8. I remember when you guys were in Europe you actually did good travel vlogs. Now it’s just fix my boat and promote the same companies every other channel promotes. There are longer sailing channels that do something different. Everyone goes the same places and shows the same thing. Nobody are adventurers anymore and want to build a brand that stands out. What a shame, I bet when you started sailing it wasn’t about the money it was about the adventure.

  9. I can't imagine what taking the oil cover out would prove honestly. I was told the engine oil will always be black because of the years this engine has and the fact inside it will always be kind of dirty because when you change your oil you never really change 100% of the old oil as some of the old oil really stays in various other engine passages… My 2 cents. I think the best thing is to send the oil to a lab (I do that every year) and see what they find…

  10. So much prep, I hope the crossing itself is calm and relaxing. For the inverter, don’t you have one or two spare smaller ones for emergency use? Some 1000w ones would run the laptops and have 5v for phones.

  11. Just a theory on the oil fouling and if somebody really knows their shiznit n I am wrong, chime in. If you run your engine much just charging the batteries without enough load you will get excessive unburnt fuel. That can clean carbon deposits off your pistons/cylinders that ends up in your crank case. Can also mainly create alot of black crap/fuel to exit your exhaust called wet stacking. Not good for an engine but not catastrophic either. Grace Huggs n back pats Bill.

  12. Thanks you two for another great video on the adventures of Calico Skies. Yes that new main sail looks absolutely fantastic. And I know you'll get great use from it. The Orange is going to be your sign to other boater's from a distance. Looking forward to more check list items to be done. Cheers

  13. Bill, you might want to consider having your engine oil tested. That will give you a very good overview of the condition of rings, bearings , valve train, pistons etc. They analyze the oil for trace metals and depending on amount of metal found in the oil it will give you a certain view of each type component. I use Blackstone Labs. Google them up and and see if you think it might be worth it to you. They will send you free test kits.

  14. Due a 2 stage engine oil flush and then refill with good branded oil and ensure good quality oil filter, no cheap brand as you can cause low oil pressures due to restricted flows. All diesels oil will be black in under 10p hrs as it gets burnt from burn by on pistons, oil dilution is your biggest enemy on a diesel from injectors.

  15. From what I've seen, not exactly related to your problem, BUT, the exhaust system needs to be perfect before a major passage. It can fail and put tons of bad exhaust into the boat in a heartbeat. It has hot gas and salt water flowing through it so its the perfect design to fail.

  16. I've changed the oil in literally thousands of diesels, they're all black like that. It's not something to worry about. If you're truly worried about it then send off a used oil sample to a lab for analysis and you'll know for certain if anything is wrong.

  17. Doesn't look like you have blowby. The definitive test is a cylinder leak down test. All engines will build up pressure as no piston seals 100%. Normal pressure is less than .5PSI but ideally zero. It varies by motor design. If you have crankcase pressure it makes your crankshaft seals wear very quickly. You do not have a blow by issue. Easier way is pull the dip stick and see how much pressure is on the hole/tube when the motor is running.

My concern was the amount of sludge buildup you had on the engine about 6-10? episodes ago. Changing your oil and using better oil would solve this problem. Note even new diesel motors will make the oil black in a short time. But please start using a better oil like Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 15W40, Rotella T6 5W40, Castrol EDGE 5W40, LiquiMoly Synthoil 5W40, are all good choices. Multi viscosity is fine and oil is much improved since tey printed your owners manual for that engine. Just use 40 weight as long as you're in warm climates.

Important your vent hose is clean and the manifold fitting is clear. While you are no where near it you should be aware on what a runaway motor is and how to stop it. Remove air filter and have a stout board you can hold firmly over the intake manifold inlet to shut off the air supply. Do NOT use your hand or a rag. BAD things will happen.

One thing you might want to do is run an injection system purge. LiquiMoly "Diesel Purge" is good for this,. Keep one extra bottle to fill your secondary (on engine) fuel filter when you change it. Lots of YouTube videos on how to do an injection system purge. Or I'd be happy to walk you through it. I'd also be using a fuel additive to account for lower sulfur fuel that they sell now. It adds lubricants and boosts cetane. Lucas, AMSOIL, Hot Shot, Schaeffer all make good ones. The Lucas 10013 is about $33/gallon on Amazon and treats 400 gallons. Use this in addition to your BioBor for algae growth.,

    Best wishes.

    Al

  18. In a diesel engine the oil should be black unlike a car engine. If you had blow by the inside of your engine cover (box) would be black and oily

  19. You might want to have a close look at the slug spacing that Tides recommends. I had a nightmare when my new main was made and the engineers at Tides did not agree with my sailmaker who spaced some of the slugs about 4' apart. You might want to add a car near the head and look closely at the batten/reefs in relation for slide size and spacing. Nice looking sail. Love the Orange

  20. I also think you should plug the breather line when you do this test, to feel the real blow by. If the breather is connected and not totally clogged, the exhaust gases in the crank will just flow through the breather. 😊

  21. If you're do float you LFP you might want to do it at lower voltage – 13.4v – easier on the battery.
Seems you like you have plenty of power but you can save a lot of power w/ a DC to DC adapter for the dishy and laptops, etc / keep the inverter out of the loop/off.
Also if you don't get all the old out when changing (aft lower end of the oil pan can hold 1/2 qt) it's hard not to have black oil right away.

  22. It looks normal, diesel oil has a detergent agent, so it always looks worse than it is, regular changes are the go Btw, if there was steam/smoke coming from the filler cap, then you would be looking at a worn out motor and just as a side thought, consider/research an oil catch can for the oil breather hose, these catch the oily vapour before they renter the moter and redierect unoxygenated air from the motor as well, the motor will run cleaner, more power and such…
