1. Awesome experience as always. Looking forward to seeing you sharing this with Rhonda! Like you, I can't see a better way of life… but having someone to share it with makes everything better. Looking forward to what's to come, James!!

  2. As a kiwi I sailed to smokehouse bay in Jan for first time. After yr prev Great Barrier Island videos I thought u may have missed Smokehouse Bay. Last night i was there about 50 attended a pizza night all contributing what they had left on their boats for toppings. Baths were overflowing with bubbles and i just remember the laughter from the group. New born babies through to people in their 80’s including global cruisers. What a treat- vow to drop off a box of shampoo and bubble bath on my next trip through. Hope this model can be replicated in bays around the world

  3. James, I have been watching your channel since the beginning, including your refit of Treteia. This winter I had the chance to buy a 1963 Alberg 30 Hull #8 and will be starting an extensive refit this spring on the Chesapeake. Thanks for the inspiration!

  4. I 🤔 it should be mandatory that every YouTube captain pulls his own anchor by hand at least once on 🎥 to prove he is the real deal 😉

  5. Also I appreciate not having to be forced to look at tids and ash .Im looking for adventure and knowledge not soft porn😅😅😅

  6. I found your channel a few months ago, and I keep looking for new videos often. The quiet and tranquility that you get when watching is unmatched!

  7. That has to be best video of yours I have seen (apart from the LA to Hawaii trip). Now I know what it feels like to pull up the anchor and wait for a bit of wind to come along and grab you, taking you forward. It was like really being there. Being a non-sailor that was pretty awesome. Smokehouse Bay, omg, a sailor's paradise – just loved the woodheater setup to heat the hot water, and a luxurious hot bath. Lucky you had the place to yourself. Then back to Triteia, and nice read, relax and wait till nightfall, just absorbing the surroundings. That is the life!! I'm gushing I know, but I really did feel it. If I get to NZ anytime, I'm definitely going there, will hire a tinny 😛 Thank you Sailor James and Happy Sails.

  8. Thanks James – inspiring, really admire your hand hauling the anchor. I struggle if I have do that so I’m definitely “windlass dependant” I can relate to slow quiet sailing, it is truly magical. safe travels my friend hope to bump into you one day.

  9. thanks for sharing, as I was last there approximately 55 years ago , missing a week of school due to the 55 knot gales LOL. We had a fab time with all the other kids

  10. A perfectly timed visit.
Is there a visitors book – if it were me I'd like to leave a message of thanks to the people who set the place up. What a generous act. What a spot.

First visited smokehouse bay 25 years ago, it's a tue kiwi cruising experience .
I'm so glad you found it. The pizza oven and retaining wall are a great addition.
