As the owner skipper of a Dutch barge on the French canals for more than a decade, the problem the yacht had in the Corinth canal is common on narrow waterways. To avoid this 1) Slow down. The more power, the more suction created between a nearby bank and the prop. 2) To get out of trouble, knock it out of gear, and in this case wheel hard to port. This cuts the suction effect and the vessel will slowly turn away from the bank and straighten up. Then , As the vessel is nearly in line again slowly add power to regain control. This skipper just tried to power his way out of trouble and thus caused it to get worse.

This vessel in the channel of Corinth could have opted for a pilot onboard, but since it is less than 800 net tons it is not mandatory. Same goes for a tug.
There is a minimum and maximum speed in the channel and everyone is expected to keep up the speed. Reason is that there is a current in the channel and if your speed drops below the speed of the current your rudders won't work anymore, you are just drifting along. One thing that does happen a lot as well in the channel, and I am not saying that this happened in this case, is that some boaters slow down to a crawl in order to give their friends on the bridge a chance to take pictures. Since all the ships travel in line with not a lot of distance in between it becomes a harmonica effect once the first one all of a sudden slows down. We had that happen to us last year when a sailing vessel (first in line) all of a sudden slowed down. We were the last in line, everyone in front of us started losing control. It was chaos and afterwards the owner of this boat got a good chewing out by the channel operator.
In any case, I don't think the captain of this vessel will make the same mistake twice, but at least his guests got a nice show. Only problem is that most likely their charter season is over. Pretty expensive mistake.
Crew area looked like it was very nice, and that they have better room in those areas, than most other tours I have seen.

The guy filming MY Home pointed out that some of the ppl onboard were running with their mobile phones to film the imminent impact with the wall. Not sure who they are so there must be some footage floating around from the yacht itself

I live near the Grand Harbour in Malta, M/Y Home was here for awhile and is really unstable, she rocked violently side to side even in mild weather, really noticeable when moored Mediterranean style. Haven't seen her here recently.
So "Bank Effect" .. You can see how it would become like a wing flowing through but the water is trying to displace back as the hull goes through pushing it like a side current. Interesting! Never heard of it before. The Question I have: When caught in this condition, what are the appropriate steps to take in order to get out of the suction?
The insurance claim was filed before the smoke had cleared, wink wink.
At the rate that these yachts are catching fire a burning out entirely and even spreading fires to other yachts and marinas, it is high time that the insurance and personal risk insurance is increased 1,000,000 times and that something is done to mitigate the fires and the spreading of these fires. Fibreglass should be banned on charter yachts.
