  1. SHHHHHHHH, with the housing crisis in North America this "recommendation" is going to push the prices of sail boats way up! (Btw, it's what I would do if I was in my 20s).

  2. In '05 it was still easy to get live-a-board Marina slips in class A locations at prices that out competed apartments in bad neighborhoods, and excentric batchelors with executive jobs in Brickel did live on 40 footers… Today, and for > 15 years, at any price even up any stinking sewer drain, there is a multiple years waiting list. Blame homless Canadian and Yankee sea-peoples LoL

  3. I dont even live anywhere near the ocean, but I so enjoy your content! Always dreaming about living on a boat in the bahamas but actually being a middle aged man with two small kids to support and grinding away in the office day in day out.
Impressive how much detailed knowledge you have and then share it so freely. Fond greetings from Austria!

  4. This is the most shameless deception imaginable. Your telling this from the comfort of the house clearly proves it. Even if you find a boat equivalent of these houses you used as example (this little boat isn't one) despite being livable, it isn't a condo, it's a specialized piece of equipment that requires special maintenance and associated expenses with reduced comfort and additional time investments. If you're on a tight budget just rent an entry level studio or room and you'll get more comfort and free time with less trouble and anxiety than owning and berthing a boat like this.

  5. Hey Tim,
I’m a long time follower of yours, both on Lady K and Practical Sailor. Do you know which marina this boat is located in? It looks like it might be Salt Ponds Marina. Anyway, I always enjoy your work and appreciate the advice!

  6. I saw this boat as I live in the area and considered it as an option. Seems like my suspicions were founded somewhat. That chainplate repair hack is a game changer though! thanks for the advice! Im still on the look out for a floating home.

  7. We don’t need more crap a boards degrading the neighbourhood. This is not likely to be one of the tweaker scum boats that pollute both the water and assault the eyes of everyone who sees them. But it’s still a pig not worth the money.

  8. The chain plates on my "74" Irwin 45cc look perfect. My biggest concern with the boat is the cable casing going to the centerboard, that had been broken by the previous owner. This repair and replacement will be a big expense in the near future.

  9. Former new boat dealer here again. At boat shows, when someone asked about living aboard a sailboat our initial advice was "Move your whole family into your bathroom and live there for a weekend. If that works out OK, you MIGHT be OK with living aboard."

  10. The more I watch cruising channels like yours the more I’m glad I never purchased a big older sailboat, don’t get me wrong I love sailing but more as a sport or weekend activity. I’ve sailed Sunfish, Thistle, Hobbie cats and I currently have a 21’ trailer sailer. Unless you want to devote nearly 100% of your free time to care and upkeep of a boat (unless you’re wealthy but then you’re not going to buy an old boat anyway) I’d steer clear, but if you have the passion well you just can’t help yourself. Cheers and good luck!

  11. Interesting idea, and probably DIY workable. Ultimately with the proposed solution you propose would be converting the boat into a short to medium term disposable housing option. The external chainplate solution would work (probably), but it would not ultimately give the boat value, it would kind of be like a mobile home and always loosing value, but that is a solution that works for millions.
