  1. Actually their style is rather appropriate for the era-examples: Anita Page and Bessie Love in The Broadway Melody(1929-won Best Picture), and The Locust Sisters-who were featured in the first series of Vitaphone talkies in 1928-one has to remember that vaudeville was still in mode-until the period immediately following the Stock Market Crash-when plotless musicals fell out of favor in general with the theatre going public. Victorian? Please refer to I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings, ect..

  2. its i ronic that when tcm started they had a version of this fair classic without this number and old devil ryhtym just the two sisters doing the hooser hop by the way it is restored to the poitn they enhanced it a bit in 3 colors time warner is anti two strip this is why they wont release under a texas moon and vienese nights they have to buy the rights back first since it wasnt part of their library they are greedy

  3. Wow… How sweet it is that this color footage survives! This represents the best of the 1920's production numbers that American movie studios could produce in 1929 (and MGM had the money to do it, too). The tap dancing, wonderful music, back-lighting, and the male chorus singing… Simply euphoria! (Sigh!)
Thanks so much for posting it… (Born too late!)

  4. @alifia23 The Locust Sisters were featured in the first series of Vitaphone talkie shorts in 1928. Five sisters who sang jazzy harmony numbers from Vaudeville.

  5. I thought I had read somewhere that MGM had originally wanted the Duncan Sisters to star in "The Bradway Melody", but that they weren't available at the time. This, apparently, was their consolation prize. Since "TBM" was released prior to this, the movie audience apparently gave "It's A Great Life" the "ho-hum"… Unfortunate, I suppose, because you can clearly see that MGM put some money into it…

  6. Love the song, what a beauty in dance and lyrics! Wish this was the art we saw today but sadly it's all these twerking and ghetto lyrics..

  7. I cannot believe that this motion picture was produced 87 years ago. All of players in this film have passed away a long time ago, but they look as if they`re still alive today. This is a magic of movies. They will live forever in this film.

  8. From IT'S A GREAT LIFE (1929), starring The Duncan Sisters (Vivian (the tall one) and Rosetta) and Lawrence Gay. Ann Dvorak is in the chorus (left center). The Duncan Sisters were among the biggest Vaudeville stars of all time. Their only other feature film was the 1927 silent TOPSY AND EVA. Lawrence Gray was a major leading man in silents and early talkies, working with major stars like Gloria Swanson and Marion Davies.

  9. No special effects in those days. The props were as you see them. Those were NOT happy go lucky times. The stock market crashed that year sending millions of people into bankruptcy , poverty, and suicide. People needed cheery songs to help them forget their problems. Prohibition was in full swing closing thousands of breweries & distilleries sending EVEN more people to the unemployment/ soup lines. Some of the BEST musicals, and memorable songs were written back then. Guys like Busby Berkeley produced some spectacular chorus shows. Those girls worked their asses off, or go without. It was The "Best of times, and the worst of times!" My folks grew up in the '20's. According to them it, "Was no picnic!"

  10. We are very lucky to have these little snippets available to watch in digital format … who really cares about the quality as long as they were saved from destruction like many thousands were. 👍👍😜😜

  11. Just love this song and the dancing
Heard it on Miss Fisher's Murder

    Dance routines…and the old movies..

    Enjoyable ….
