  1. I love this song. I was 12 years old in 1972 when this came out. It gave me goosebumps then and still does now. My sister had it on 45 and we used to play it all the time on her Dansette record player. Happy memories never fade.

  2. Am currently watching a 1986 telemovie called "The Right of the People" and this song was being sung by school children at a funeral. For some reason I had to find out if this song was, indeed, written by Rod Stewart, and if not, how old is the original.

  3. Our Spirit will be free and our soul will be at peace when One day we will all make this final journey to meet Our Heavenly Father who will welcome us home with open arms with so much Love than you can ever imagine ❤️

  4. This ALWAYS reminds me of Masses that we used to have in the chapel of school. Especially when it gets to "oh Lord to be with you." Always have to play it again when i come upon it.

  5. As much as I would love to join the "the original is better" crowd, I would be lying if I claimed that I do not consider the Rod Stewart version better.

It just is, there's no way around it. That doesn't mean this original version is bad, I just like the Rod Stewart version more.

  6. It was only when I heard this version that I really "got" the song. It's the penultimate line of the third verse, "Will I see you?", which makes sense of it all, and which Rod sings as "To be near you" iirc. In the original version there's ambiguity, uncertainty, quest, – as they said, the song is about mankind's spiritual journey. And I think you can make out some ambiguity about whether the singer is returning alive or dead, his soul finding its way home – like in Loch Lomond, with high and low roads home.

  7. the harmonies, melody and lyrics of this song are genius.. very spiritual…
this version sounds something strange to me though..
