@ Gitta, You are using the wrong tape !!! I use sports tape about 8-10 inches with the bitter ends of the lines in the middle. Start on one side of 2" wide sports tape and roll the two lines together. Then tape the middle where the two lines join each other and the ends of the tape where it touches the lines. Have done this hundreds of times. And NEVER, NEVER had the two lines part. Way over kill. But you should be careful as the new halyard enters and exits the mast head.
Just changed the new halyard rope on Catalina 36. A shop did for my boat though.
Did you drop the tape measure into the water?
Thanks for the video. We've been slowly replacing our running rigging and I've been putting off the main halyard, outhaul, and reefing lines because of having to whip them. I'd seen other videos, but yours looks the simplest.
Thanks again for taking the time to do this.
thanks for the video. can I have all your old lines? they look to be in better shape than mine.
by the way, its not a halyard rope or a halyard line. a halyard is a line. a specific kind of line. so if you say halyard line, it's like saying a line line.
Great advice.
thanks
I get that sailrite is a reputable company so why are they still suggesting we as viewers learn from someone who doesn't even know how to tie a bowline? (3:25)
Ha ha, I learned something: that annoying torsional twist knot you get in lines is called a "hockle". Gonna use that one on my boat.
You tied that bowline all wrong – will hold nothing and it's not suited for halyards anyways. If you are not splicing halyards, then you should use either a halyard knot or double fisherman's loop on a schackel. Those are the only knots with strength similar to splicing + they are compact and will not get stuck in the top of the mast. (Bowline knot has only around 40% strength of a splice.)
Excellent video
I have a question……where is your chin ?
Fantastic explanation. I saw other videos that showed one how to snake the halyard through the mast. But your way seems the best way to go if halyard is still in the mast. Thanks, I will now try this with confidence.
thanks – this confirmed for me, several aspects I was thinking about & worked out great!
Im just here to learn from all the experts in the comment section that dont have a single video.
Use a halyard knot at the shackle, not a bowline.
Good job Matt! I just changed both halyards today following your great instructions. It was very easy. The new sta-set ropes looks really nice on my S2 7.3. Thanks for the video.
Staset braid can be eye spliced with a thimble to make the best possible connection
So weird, I looked everywhere on a bunch of boats for ‘halyard rope’ and only found halyards and lines! Its like ropes don’t even exist on the boats I’m on… hehehe
Thanks
It would be nice if there was a faster way to attach the ends for pulling. I have to do so many of these

Awesome video. I'll be replacing my Topping Lift in the same manner shown in this video👍👍👍👍👍
