get a "work sharp" (ken onion edition) knife sharpener… for a razor sharp filet knife.
You did a great job filleting that fish. I also am not interested in eating fish heads.
How much fish can you catch on a daily basis.
I remember sailing from Tampa to Panama City. A three day trip but only an hour or so of fishing. No freezer on board and not much room in the Ice Chest. We ate lot of fish but we also wasted too much. If the guy was like us and couldn't keep the meat from fresh then I'm ok with discarding the Dorado as he did.
Your filleting knife needs a sharpen
when cleaning a fish you slice DONT SAW ….its not a pice of wood
Horror!
I dont want to play the negative guy but you can feed a army with the waste! Nice catch!!!!
Crap video! There is not much "how to fish from a yacht", it's most a demonstration of how not to fillet..
you disrispect the ocean..
wasteful and bad filleting!
This is the RIGHT way to do it:

The way he kills fish is "Ike-Jime". It is the Japanese way to kill a fish. Personally, I believe it is the best way to kill a fish. The way he takes the meat is typically UK or Northern American, no-bone fish fillet is the only thing in the normal supermarket unless you go to Chinatown.
Nice fish. Shame this guy really doesn't have a clue. So many incorrect ideas, it's hard to know where to start.
How far back did he put the lure??? It matters, based on boat speed, wake etc.
Never gaff a fish "underneath", because if you miss, could easily dislodge the hook. Never gaff it on the shoulder, or anywhere in the eating part. Always under the chin, or throat. This is gaff 101.
If you are going to filet a fish on youtube, maybe learn how to do it first. Go to a fish market or store, or a fishing boat and ask them to show you. It takes a fair while to learn how to do this properly, and a very long time to do it fast and neat, without leaving half the fish on the bone. If you are going to kill an animal to eat, make it worthwhile.
Could you perhaps give some details? Hook size, hook type, line strength, reel, rod, leader, swivels? Snubbers? thanks!!
Идиот.
Terrible video, terrible guide, terrible in general.
Lots of criticism by most who probably can't sail a boat.
Damn, these people are acting like you killed an endangered fish! They ain't saying shit when they're eating Hamburger Helper and you're eating mahi-mahi! LOL!
It's not that bad, the guy has done some fishing before. The fillet job wasn't the best. He does have the gaffe theory correct, but needs some practice, and I do like that he opts for the rod and reel instead of a hand line.
That is a waste of a good fish meat.
Amateur.
He took what he needed and gave the rest back again. Did you ever see it that way ?
My goodness, you must never touch a knife again.
Why are you teaching people to gaff backwards?
Good video but a horrible job of belaying that fish
For all those that are saying that he didn’t process enough meat, you’re right! However, you have also got to remember that the ocean’s creatures will take full advantage of the other parts and it will be put into good use. None of it went to waste if you think about it. EDIT: Also forgot to mention you could also cut the head off and put it onto a big hook, see what you catch then.
It doesn't look like you or the people you work for are wanting…not a good way to live life….sorry to say.
How do you keep the rod in that holder? Just seems any hard resistance would put your rod in the ocean.
You throw away 2/3 of the fish. Thank God you don't have to feed yourself with fishing.
Glad that the comments are mostly rightfully only complaining about the waste of fish here, rather than the act of killing it.
Regardless, no part of the fish was really wasted. The carcass was eaten in full by either birds, mammals, or shark and returned to the ecosystem.
Killer Whales will literally kill an entire Humpback Whale and only eat the animal's tongue, leaving the entire whale to scavengers.
Being picky is what apex predators do.
A moment of silence for all the meat that was thrown overboard.
Why would anyone make a how to video about something they clearly don’t know anything about? If anyone ever saw you cleaning a fish like that in Alaska they would save the fish and throw you overboard. At least learn how to sharpen a knife.
Ouch !! I knew something was up with 25 percent disliking this video. Well the video is now over five years old, I hope to God someone taught you how to fillet. For those that didn't see the problem, in my part of the world it's called wanton waste and it's illegal in some cases. This is similar to me shooting a deer and taking only the hindquarter and backstrap leaving the rest to waste.
It' not even a bull, dude.
Probably two solid pounds of meat in the head of a mahi that size. UGH!
How do you know how much line comes out of the reel as you let it go?
Eat the collar!
That was the dumbest way I have ever seen anyone dispatch or filet a Mahi, you didn't even take its head meat and that was a cow not a bull bro
Firstly, its a cow dorado. Secondly, stick to sailing mate not fishing. That was hard to watch.
So wasteful ! Hope you at least did a better job in cooking it than filiting it.
why kill a fish and not eat it all. what a waist
A great way to bleed the fish without getting it all aboard your deck is to tail rope the fish and tie him to a cleat and pull him for a little ways (after you've made a cut in the gills and at the tail).
Don't wait to gaf it.
