thx. wonderful. wonderful dear 4 wind turtles
Oh THAT bbc. Was wondering…
"I had to shoot that shark"
This was a strange documentary. It started ok then wandered off into the sing-handed events of the sixties and mixed shots of the 70's top.. while I enjoy that stuff, I was an avid follower at the time but it was way less about sailing of normal people in the 60's .
Thant for posting and for the BBC to leave it here. Cheers Warren .
Great docko. Also, after watching, the lyrics to the Dire Straits song "Single Handed Sailor" now make a bit more sense…
OMG! That Narrator, 35:10 . Did I hear him say " I'm sorry, Dave; I'm afraid I can't do that"? He HAS GOT TO BE Kubrick's HAL 9000!
As a youngster in the 60s, I certainly wasn't "looking forward to emulating" anyone in yachts. Dinghies were where it was at, keelboats were boring and for old men!
How nice. Imagine me: restoring a dragon from 1938 and hearing the narrator say: "This is the kind of boat men leave their women for" …
Weather forecasting is still awful.
Great heavy thick boats….true bluewater crafts.
"And thought it would be much nicer for an Englishman to do it first", just tells a lot about how Bernard was the true gentleman in this race. And How BBC not to mention any words about Moitessier, who in fact won and refused to get the prize, sailing south back to Tahiti. Well, old chaps, makes me want to beat you guys even more on water, that was maybe the plan afterall 🙂

In 2022 I shall be the first to attempt and succeed to sail a 60s mirror dinghy around the world none stop single handed. This feat has never before been attempted, surviving only on a diet of Tesco baked beans with Green King Best bitter.
Was that a challenge at the end, : one man has sailed around the world three times non stop: the next frame was a mirror dingy, without watching again, with a spinnaker. Has this been done yet, is it possible? Who's up for it?
Shame on 'Stanley Best' i think Donald would have made the right call, should he not have been under the pressure of paying 'Best' back….
my Dad I and I built one in the 70's and now I race a 40 ft offshore race Yacht in Asia
The Crowhurst story is sad – clearly very stressful
Make the prisoners sail around the world alone .
That would make a perfect time served .
Thank you for the wonderful memories.
Sailing experienced a wonderful boom. The results included the establishment of much of the infrastructure we enjoy today. Sadly, we have failed to sustain the momentum and have the problems of aging membership and infrastructure. As a sport, the leadership of our associations are elected from the elite clubs and the high profile aspects of the sport. At the moment it is the grassroots clubs that are most vulnerable, but the problems are coming fast.
The economic crises of 2008/10 and 2019/21 and resulting insecurity of employment must curtail discretionary expenditures for many. Boats are a commitment to ongoing expenditure and many will wisely curtail such outlays. Our sport needs to develop new and compelling offerings for these changed times.
I lost all enthusiasm for sailing when sailing dinghies.
"sailing has been likened to tearing up fivers under a cold shower"
The auspicious lier extremely trade because turkey dolly raise outside a uncovered equinox. heavenly heavy hellish, defective riverbed
Thanks :O)
