We’re not having a go at younger cruisers, we LOVE younger cruisers! We want to encourage older cruisers by showing that there are many, many people of retirement age who live this life. If you just watched YT channels you might be fooled into thinking we oldies were in the minority. You can read the full blog post here: https://followtheboat.com/5-reasons-why-you-are-not-too-old-to-sail-round-the-world/ 😊 Liz
I've always wanted to sail but family prevented it for decades but now my kids are grown, my husband passed away 2 years ago and so now I have the time. I'm very handy, do carpentry, lots of common sense, great sense of humor and am a pretty good cook. I'm 64 and would like an opportunity to get some experience.
Just Cruising up the west coast of the USA is something I dream of doing. I'm 68.
I'm 49, bought my Yacht when I was 48, the plan is to get some miles under my belt, then all being well at some point in my 50's I want to go a sail around the med, two reasons for this, my children will all have left school, and I have learnt from others with dreams, that keep holding back that your health can take a sudden change, do the things you want to do whilst you can 🙂
Been sailing off and on for a while, bought my own boat @ 71+ (a Columbia 8.7) and have been sailing every weekend for the past 3.9 years. Spend a couple weeks each Jan in BVI's and will celebrate my 75th next month on a boat in BVI. My wife a few years older is afraid of the water so most of the time I am single handed or with guests. I think next year I will but a 36 – 40 ft boat in FL (they are cheaper down there) and spend the winter sailing the Caribbean with or without my wife (she suggested a sailing wife for me.. There is an opening here if you want to spend Jan – March sailing the islands.
I'm 67, got a 31' when I was 30. I'm glad I did a lot of sailing when I was younger, the older I get the less I like the idea of circumnavigating. Still like cruising in hot spots like the caribean and the meditteraeon. But sailing those thirty day passages on the ocean no longer appeals to me. It just seems boring.
Hi guys love your vedios
I am 85 and just sailed solo from San Diego to Hawaii in a 27 foot boat. And that is not a record. 89 is the record for a solo circumnavigation.
Yes, the sailor that circumnavigated at 89 did it with stops and it took him 10 years. His name is Harry Heckel.
I am 52, at the moment i am a landlubber here on the east coast of south africa, lol maybe time to go out to sea!
Ide be hard pressed to afford a leaky Dhingy, 3rd hand from a pirate who stole it washed up on shore.
Thanks for making these types of videos. Even though I'm in my early/mid twenties, I'll be able to share this video with people who use age as a silly excuse to avoid chasing their dreams
Merry Christmas to you both. Bought the yacht, busy doing it up. I've not got Indonesia on "the list" but I do have Nova Scotia, the Caribbean, the Pacific all the way to Australia and New Zealand. The list mainly consists of things and places I want to go see and do, and at 63 with failing health I figure a Boat is the way to go. I basically want to see how far I can get and what I can survive. So in ten years you can try to add me to your demographics, if I make it LMHO . I survived touring Europe on a motorbike, Paragliding, driving HGV's on British and European roads, being on my own for long periods. So sailing the Atlantic should be a decent learning curve, and the Pacific be the next logical step. So keep a weather eye on the horizon for a Geordie who's growing old reprehensibly !
very pretty lady. keep having fun
Hi guys. This was very interesting. I am 68 fit and want to embarking on a cruising lifestyle. I am very excited at the prospect of adventure as i have always been keen to travel. I would like to confirm an assumption. In your experience, do cruisers enjoy SE Asia the most?
Merry Christmas to you both.
Pension, savings, or property to rent out. These are all the exact reason why young sailors are on youtube, because they have NONE of this.
Just subscribed to your channel as I’m looking to purchase a 45/55ft used sailing boat as a permanent live aboard…….really interesting information !!
What puts me off is not my age (66) but my technical abilities or rather lack of them. Everybody says you have to be self reliant. Ahhhhhh!
Two things:
1 – Old? OLD??????? We are whippersnappers at an average 5* years (discretion filter applied)
2- Can you update the details in your description as our lacks a link. Pretty please??
Thank you very much for the mention. We really appreciate it
72 & looking for a bigger boat 44Ft. (electric winches). Most of my friends are now not to well, Particularly in the muscular side , I no sailing keeps me fit , healthy & alert & if i dont like my neighbors i can always lift the pick.Oh & a solid dodger.
Thumbs up Jamie and Liz! 65 and still got it in me. Pension, Rental, S.S. hmm.
I am 38 single male and I dream to find a mate and sail the world, I am an electrician and mechanical incline. I live way up in Canadian along way away from the ocean so hard to get started. Good to know the average ages of sailers. Thanks for posting great videos.
Do you see a time when you both go back on land, or are you liveaboards till death? 😉
“And a woman”. Wow, women can do stuff. Who would have guessed.
Lovely and accurate (in my personal experience), and this is true of passagemakers, too (power boats that are used in a similar way to how Jamie and Liz use their boat). A tech. question, if I may: what lens did you have on the GH5 for this video—the background rendering, and subject isolation is very pleasing.
Great to have that message. Another thought on age (from a 72 year old):
"Age is nothing. Attitude is everything."
i use my younger kids to do the hard work.. and it works for this old fart 70+ and still sailing with the younger generation. 10+
Wow, You made my day. I am 66 years old, two years ago I was diagnosed with a liver disease, with only one solution. A liver transplant. I declined and the last year I “healed” myself with positive thinking, diets, vitamin's supplements etc. a good part of the year I spent watching YouTube movies of sailors “live-aboard's” I know now what to do when I grow up! All I have to do is buy a boat, learn to sail. My partner is a great supporter of the idea and thanks to movies like this I find the courage to do so. Thank you very much!
wow
I just love your videos, they are so informative and helpful. (I just turned 43 and am planning to rent out the house and move aboard within a year) As a bonus the outtakes always make me laugh out loud as well. Thank you!
Edit: I just saw that this is 9 months old. I guess the YouTube algorithm knows I was feeling a touch sensitive about my birthday.
I am 86 getting ready to depart for Hawaii in three weeks, in my 29 ft. Sailboat Semper Fi. This will be my sixth trip to Hawaii..
I'm 74, UK now living in Brasil, spending my time sailing on speed boats and schooners….
Love your video! And the fact an older woman found a handsome younger man to partner with.. I'm turning 60 in Aug you've given me hope. Cheers to the two of you! Thank you for posting.
We all know why you clicked I the video…
i am 65 and in june i sailing , so see you some plays around atlantic ,and my boat are only 19feet ,see you,,
I’m wanting to sail around the world, but I hate the deep and hate the sea and can’t swim 🤔
There's hope yet. 64 now but wife wont go near a boat.
Still, i am 51 and intend to set-off before i'm 55…
Oldest solo non stop circumnavigator was 75+. He did it in a Steel custom jobbie out of Japan.
There is no "too old". Maybe not even a "too sick" as catamarans can be rigged all sorts of ways.
Thanks for the pep talk At 67 and still working as marine mechanic and shoulder surgery just a day away, I thought that maybe we wouldn't get those lines untied on our 38 ft. cutter at the dock.
truth
I learned to sail at 58. Bought my first boat at 60. Now 74 and looking for another.
And the old sea dog
I bought my first sailboat in 1998 (a Swarbrick 21ft). I was 38. I'd never sailed before. I hopped aboard with the previous owner to give me a quick demo sail, and I took it from there. Now I'm 61 and my knees are buggered, but I'm determined to have another go with a larger boat.
Okay wtf is with all the clickbait sluts when you lookup sailing around the world?
