Life as we know it has been completely turned upside down with the appearance of the coronavirus, and the future, at least in the short term, will be one of restrictions and precautions regarding our daily lives. In the “new world” where social distancing is the first condition for any outing, our vacations will change radically. That’s why, for beach and sun lovers, vacations on the sea, in sailboats or motor yachts, will be some of the safest options to stay by the sea, far from crowded beaches and crowds.
Social distancing and dream vacation at the same time
Sailing on sailboats has always been a concern for those who have sought to distance themselves socially from the crowds of people crowded on beaches, terraces, clubs, or all-inclusive hotels. And this is not a concern just yesterday or today. Millions of people choose to spend their vacations on sailboats rented in various areas of the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, or the Pacific every year. Thousands of families from Romania have discovered in the last 10-15 years the beauty of vacations spent at sea, away from hotels; whether in Turkey, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Spain, or France, they return year after year by the sea.
Sailing, although the word has not yet entered the attention of the Academy to be introduced in the dictionary, is a sport of rather solitary people, of those who want to enjoy peace, nature, quiet bays, undiscovered beaches.
Somehow, in the context of the hysteria unleashed by the new coronavirus that swept the planet from end to end and has completely changed all our vacation plans, but more than that, has completely ruined our relaxation with the way we will look at a stranger approaching us, sailing becomes one of the ways in which more and more people will choose to spend their vacations away from the crowds of people who come to the beaches, in huge hotels, in crowded clubs.
Vacation on a boat suddenly became one of the safest options for spending time at the sea; leave the house, get in the car or on a motorcycle, drive to the port, and go out to sea.
Sailing not only takes you to remote, almost virgin places but also immediately connects you with nature, the sea, water, the sun, and its benefits. Once out at sea, the risk of coming into contact with people infected with the coronavirus is almost zero. You can choose to spend your evenings anchored in bays, have a romantic dinner on deck, swim only in isolated areas, far from crowds. Even if you decide to stay in a port instead of anchoring overnight, you will still be protected. You can order food from restaurants or stock up and cook on the boat; this way you can isolate yourselves on your boat but still enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere of the towns or villages you will visit. You can also cook the fish you caught yourself from the boat. On such a vacation, the boat becomes your own bubble that keeps you at a social distance from others but still carries you from one place to another without keeping you physically isolated in the same place.
A safe, economical, and ecological vacation
With a sailboat, you will not be able to make a very long route in a short time, but you will have the opportunity to be in a different place every evening, enjoy different landscapes, see different people, discover new tastes, and still be safe, without having to change hotels daily. A 40-foot sailboat usually has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, a living room, and a fully equipped kitchen, and will cost you around 2000-2500 euros per week (about 400 euros per person, a more than reasonable price for accommodation in the Mediterranean). You will have almost all the comfort of home, but the landscapes and memories will be unforgettable.
What we learned from this pandemic is that the Earth needs a break to breathe a little. Traveling on a sailboat is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to move from one place to another. Once the sails are raised, we turn off the engine and only use the wind and sea currents to move to the next destination. You can also opt for a motor yacht, but unfortunately, these are not the best friends of the wind, and the pollution they generate is not to be neglected.
The comfort on a sailboat is almost like home. You don’t necessarily have to be on a megayacht to enjoy comfort. Indeed, you will not have a large bathtub to fill with hot water, you will not have a Thermomix or a 180 cm screen TV, nor a remote control to control all the equipment in the house, but instead, you can enjoy unique sunsets, permanent aerosol showers, perfect swimming waters, and nights under a sky full of stars.
