  1. Nice! More people should know what a sailors tattoos represent. To date I have earned both swallows, golden shellback, golden dragon, hula girl, and penguin (for Antarctic circle crossing). I have only gotten my pig and rooster on my feet done so far but the rest will come in time!

  2. I don’t buy the swallow for 5000 nautical mile theory. One trip across the Pacific will get you more than that. I always heard that since swallows migrate south every winter, and then return in the spring, the swallow tattoos guaranteed a seaman would return home.

  3. I love tattooing, but its one of the most challenging things I've ever learned how to do. I could not imagine tattooing on a sailboat on the rocky sea in the 18th century with zero sanitary measures and no understanding of what germs are and how skin infections work. History is mind boggling and fascinating.

  4. Really? A ship full of men for months at a time and one of them shows you his swallow tat? What do you think it really means, for crying out loud…

  5. I was an Ordinary Seaman with the Merchant Navy. Have a dragon coiled around an anchor, on my right shoulderblade. The dragon for travels in South East Asia and the Pacific, the anchor as remembrance of adventures (and a tragedy) in the Atlantic.

  6. Might be a dumb question; but wondering if there’s any other tattoos that symbolized crossing the other oceans? Or what about the Arctic/Antarctic circles??

  7. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 a lot of ppl didn’t know tattoos are from the Polynesian culture ✊🏾 Tatau means tattoo 🤙🏽🤙🏽

  8. I wonder, does anyone know about any art historians or archivists who made it a point to take pictures of sailors and their tattoos? There's got to be some kind of a collection from the late 1800s or something. I just think it would be really interesting to look at.
