  1. From what I have seen the Macgregor sails as fast as a displacement boat, so what’s the point of those critical of it? Seems like a no brainer for close to shore sailing.

  2. I use to deliver the Resins for MacGregor. Twice a week i'd go to the factory. I use to love going there and ask questions. I was from South Central L.A, never had any knowledge of sailing, just wasn't an activity you do if from the inner city. I would also deliver some materials to other Marine Dealers, Repair facilities etc. Costa Mesa is adjacent to Newport Beach, Ca. with a large private yacht harbor. The Elite Snob Factor regarding the Disdain for McGregor was VERY HIGH. Of course me coming from where I did, I always had a real soft spot for the MacGregors. lol I would have bought one but getting into Sailing, the cost, Time, etc was more than I could handle. I would have had to live on the boat. lol I think the daughter had her company, factory out of florida, could be wrong
I was sad to hear the Original factory closed down years ago. Due to retirement, not Demand i understand. Well, Time moves on as they say.

  3. I have an 18" draft traditional sail boat with a light center board and full stub keel. 5 kts hull speed. Sometimes i just want to get to the sandbar before the powerboats grab all the good spots. Then sail home. This seems perfect.

  4. Thanks for doing this video on Macgregor. I have a 26x and had to defend it very often from sailing snobs. I think the fact that I can afford this boat and have sailed it for many years, have adapted it the way I like and can maintain it myself is enough. They should not criticize keeping it simple.

  5. "Any port in a storm."

These and other Macgregor boats put lots of people on the water. Now a new generation of inflation fighters are restoring and sailing them. I'm all for it.

  6. I’ve never sailed a McGregor, and I’ve heard stories of how flexible the deck is underfoot, but I also can’t recall ever hearing of one failing significantly. Every boat is a compromise of one sort or another. My one complaint is that they still sell for a relatively higher price on the used market. They definitely fill a need. I didn’t know they were now sold as Tattoo yachts. I thought mr. McGregor’s son had inherited the molds and tried to make them in Florida. I heard he failed to make a go of it. Good to hear his daughter is doing it. Any boat manufacturer that pumps out what, 36,000 hulls, must be doing something right! Glad you covered this one

  7. Great review and thank you for making this one as well as all of post! Such a great channel to learn and grow into sailing with! Thank you so much for all you do!

  8. Well lord frothington here owns a phil rhodes pearson vanguard. she sails like a dream and is salty down below. I say what the hell! what is sailing about? Fun! and Safety! and oh yea the kids and yes hell driving it on to the beach. oh and no yard and mooring bills. If the fun factor is high that trumps all else. can you video a trip on this baby? sufs up dude!

  9. Alright up to wind force 3. Then when the whitecaps on the waves appear, hope your ridiculously large engine starts, to get you to the nearest marina.
Everything on it is flimsy, the mast, rigging, mooring cleats, all very light-duty. But as a roomy weekender with the ability to negotiate very shallow waters and sit level on a beach between tides, yeah, it could be fun.
My friend's Mac 26 snapped her mast on her mooring, despite the water ballast she rolled so badly and with the lifting keel up, made it worse. Anyway the skinny little shroud wire snapped in about a force 5.
It's debatable if anyone can learn to sail in such a craft. Learn to sail first, in a small dinghy, not one of these.

  10. The utility aspects of this boat are amazing. Ant type of hybrid is a compromise. but this boat absolutely shines in its ability to be both a sailboat you can get into the shoals with and as a powerboat you can cover a lot of water with. It can pull a skier, it is not a bad fishing boat AND be put it on trailer that can be launched and taken out by one person. I know of no other boat that can do all this.

  11. Great piece, thanks. Every endeavour in life has it's share of snobs, people who need to show their perceived superiority by any means; I have a sail on my kayak, it's my freaking yacht.

  12. the best Macgregor is the first powersailer- the Macgregor19. Why is it better than the bigger ones? Tiller steered(which is huge deal as it takes the pedestal out of the cockpit), 19 feet is far more manageable on a trailer, higher proportion of waterballasting (which is useful for trolling for fish as well as sailing), no front hatch, good position of bathroom(every ladies favourite feature), removable hatch instead of a sliding hatch, and best of all, two piece mast the breaks down and fits INSIDE the boat. Simplest rig too. they do not sail well true, but sail well down-wind and because of the decent engine, you power into a downwind sailing situation. You use your sails for a different reason; to extend your range, and for fun. Also it is a trailer sailer, name a decent sailing trailer sailer that is not a big money trimaran. I have had all sorts of boats for lake use, and this is the favourite hands down, particularly with kids. Do not take my word for it, present commodore of New York Yacht club has one he uses to teach his grandkids to sail in . . . and he says he is very happy with it.

  13. I have sailed all over the Great Lakes on my 26m. It was my first sailboat and although I am rapidly outgrowing it, it’s tough to make the jump to huge slip and storage fees for only better sailing and a lot worse motoring.

  14. 26m. Perfect boat for puget sound! Take it to lakes all over the northwest. Can trailer up close to San Juan’s and see a lot in a short while. Great for small family of aspiring sailors. It does not point well, slips/leeway, and even with 70hp it will not do 20mph. With fam and food and bedding and mast!!😊…More like 15 and gets about .5mpg at that speed!! Still love it!! Amazing little boat!

  15. We had an 26X when we lived in British Colombia and it was the ideal boat for living and boating on a fiord when the wind spends most of its time blowing inland. We could sail for hours and then fire up the engine and be home in minutes. The is no question that it was a great sailing boat, but we spent many nights and weekends on her and would not have had a much fun had we been on a standard boat. They are thin and sweat a lot but they haul easily and can be put in just about anywhere. Since we had our X which be bought used and sold in a matter of days we have had a 26 Tanzer, two 30' Hunters and a 22' Eden back here on the Bay of Fundy. I not so sure I would want a MacGregor here but she was new perfect in BC.

  16. Before MacGregor made the planing hull sailboats, they made a lot of traditional displacement hull boats – some with cast-iron swing keels and others with water ballast and centerboards. We've had a '94 26S for a long time. We haven't had a chance to use it too much in recent years, but it costs essentially nothing sitting up at the cottage on the trailer. In the past when our kids were still at home, we used it a lot in northern Lake Michigan and Lake Huron (including multiple vacations in the spectacular North Channel). It can handle some pretty rough open waters, but was also great for tucking into little bays we could have to ourselves. We'd pull up the centerboard and rudder, drop the anchor, take a stern line to shore and have in such shallow water that we could just wade back and forth to the beach without needing to use the dingy (sometimes we had to shift it a bit forward so the swim ladder didn't hit the bottom). We towed it for years with a minivan, and it fit all four of us plus our Chesapeake Bay retriever. The interior is far from luxurious, but we're also campers, so it was fine. Topsides, it's quite roomy, with a nice sized cockpit and plenty of lounging space on the bow for kids and a dog. It's not too slow of a sailor, either – faster than any of the shorter cruising boats anyway. TBH, it really isn't much slower than the much larger charter boats we've sailed on bareboat vacations in the Caribbean. It was even fast enough under power (about 7 kts max) for it to be fun to tow the kids in a tube on a hot, windless day.

  17. My first sailboat was a MacGregor 25’. I sailed it out of all the harbors in So California. I moved up to a 25’ Catalina and I now have a wonderful Columbia 8.7 which is a very capable coastal cruiser. Thank you Roger MacGregor without you I may never have ventured in to sailing.

  18. My friend had one, and we'd sail together on the Chesapeake. He loved it, and his wife appreciated it's roomy accommodations. I had many a good barbecue on it, when we rafted up. But sailing, it couldn't keep pace with my little O'day 22. About once an hour I'd look back to see him starting that big ol' outboard, then he'd run it to catch up with me, then slowly fall behind again. My impression was that it was a bit complicated for my tastes, with a big motor (probably worth more than my whole boat) and plastic kick-up water ballasting rudders, etc, but that if you were ok with a lot of motoring and whatever costs and maintenance that entails, it was a fine little hybrid couples/family boat with a lot of room for its size.

  19. The water ballast baffles some people. This boat has to be configured for the mission it is tasked with ie, sailing or motoring. What appeals to me is the extreme shallow draft and the ability to be trailered. Also the interior is well thought of for people comfort for day sailing. They seem to have had a resurgence evidenced by the higher resale value of the later models.

  20. One of the guys at the rod and gun club has a McGregor 24. With the wide beam and pop top it's roomy enough for fishing and hanging out. We turned it into a ratchet riverboat casino when we had poker night.

  21. I have never been a purist in any sport, I have never felt need to sqeeze that extra 1/2 knot out, drives my sailing buddies nuts. I do like the boating, sail and power. Not having money for every toy I am big on, I look for something that covers as many thing as possible. I have built a canoe, full sail, outriggers, rowing option, and a 2hp. You can walk around in it, row silently, and leave a wake sailing downwind. Lastly does something deliver as addvertized. So, ya I bought a 26X. I boat in the PNW of NA, stern tighing, shallow bays, and more Islands than anywhere else in the world. Lots of Islands means lots of tidal surge spots, up around 14 knots. This leaves groups of boats collecting at these spots waiting for slack tide, timing these can be your day. Me, I drop the ballast, keel up, 22 kts and a fun ride thru rapids, avoid the whirlpools, spit out to others waiting the other side, pull up behind them and reverse the transition back to sail in a few minutes and sail away, that s the point the other sail boats captains use inappropriate hand jestuers, lol. And as advertized, on route to one of the best sailing destinations on the west coast, I worked in a 3 day music festival where I had booked RV camping. I made the local news and had comfy accomodations! You are quite correct, you need the right guy for these boats, this fit my needs. But dont tell my partner, IM looking again at a 19', she is with you on the Catalinas, lol.

  22. The flexibility to use it as assumed or motorboat, plus being trialerdable, and pretty good looking! my 26d is a great starter trailer/sailed as well. Get the basics down for a relatively low price. Thank you for showing these as an option.

  23. I wouldn’t say no to a MacGregor! Especially for using on a small lake, the kids can waterski one minute or we could have a quiet sail up n down with all the ski boats buzzing us annoyingly, LOL.

  24. “The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people are so full of doubts.”

    Bertrand Russell

Have fun in whatever boat YOU like.
Build your own if you want.
    Ignore the stupid haters.

  25. Would this a good first boat for me?
50 year old, never sailed except basic cruising certification, wife lukewarm on sailing in terms of learning thing, 6 year son. Lake Ontario

  26. I was looking for a boat, started looking at a macgregor19, wondered what it was like, watched some videos, the comments section was full of hate, so much hate from people who have never owned one. Then I found this " I have one, I bought it to teach and introduce my grandkids to sailing, to this day it still gets used quite a bit for all sorts of reasons, I am very happy with it" That was from the current Commodore of the New York Yacht club! You are wrong too bud, the good one is the 19, has a tiller instead of a wheel, lower profile, more water ballast, and best of all the mast breaks in two and is stored inside the boat when not in use, and the toilet is where it is on the X not the M.

  27. honestly you sail different, all downwind and reaching, what a planing hull is good at, then punch into the waves instead of tacking. Saves us so much money on petrol.

  28. I have an M 19 and I get the snob treatment from real sail boats, but I don't care. I have a 50 Suzuki on the back, I can trailer into large lakes that real sail boats can't and I can spend a week with my kid camping on the water going remote places that power boats don't have enough gas to reach. I sail when I can and motor when I can't. No worries about engine problems and being stranded. I love the thing. I wouldn't sail it in the open ocean, but it's perfect for what I use it for.

  29. It has the same problem as hunting. Gatekeepers, the reason why hunting is dying off is cause of the old heads who think it HAS to be done THEIR way or it’s wrong. Combine that with the lack of space to do said hobbies and the expense of equipment, hardly any new people CAN AFFORD or FIND places to participate, and when they do they have to endure belittling from the experienced people.
