  1. Something a bit different to the usual gliders (But still RC and wind powered)
This was the first try of my own-design Land Yacht. The body is made from light-ply, with carbon fibre tubes for the mast, boom, and axels.
The wheels are from an old model aircraft. I gave about 45 degrees rake on the steering. The sail is made from rip-stop nylon and operated using a high-torque servo.
I may give the rear wheels some camber and adjust the sail slightly, but the test run went well.
The wind was blowing about 12-13 mph.

  2. Good job designing and building John! And great camera work, assuming it was your wife. Very similar to the ice boats we use on frozen lakes here in Michigan.

  3. Great…
It looks like so much fun.
    Thank you John.
I remember seeing full man sized ones during the winter in Minnesota, racing on frozen lakes…of course they had blades instead of wheels.
    Exciting to see new ideas.

  4. Fantastic. Id have to use a parking lot if I had such a vehicle. I don't know of any hard pack sand around here.
Is this the beach you fly over at your glider site?

  5. Nice change of pace.
It appears the sail is fixed, so keeping it in the wind is a process of steering the whole vehicle. Would this be correct?
Neat little cart. Thanks for posting this video.

  6. That's brilliant! I hope you didn't have Mrs. Woodfield running after it while filming…………… Best new year to you both, stay safe, and many many thanks for your work in 2020. Top Bloke!

  7. That is so cool I love it. On my way to the shop and start gathering parts as I also do RC sailboats so should have pieces. Can you tell me approx. measurements, length, width, height ? Thank's John.

  8. I used to have two land yachts A single seater prototype and a two seater set up with dual controls. Best good clean fun on a beach ou could have. Spent many afternoons and late evenings with my kids (aged 4-6 back then) going up and down the beach. I used to tuck them into a sleeping bag to keep them warm and sail off into the sunset. I can see lots of improvements you can make to yours but I will let you discover them for yourself. There is a big smile on my face watching your video. I also must ask what technique was used to follow the yacht along with the camera. Surely your longsuffering wife was not running along beside it.

  9. Great headwork John, always playing with different toys😜😜, the inusual thing is your thing, congratulations! It looks fun to stay in the beach at summer with the girlfriend, and not be worried😁😁.
Thanks for share with us 😎👍👍

  10. Beautiful efficient sail ! How did you set the drawing/sewing/shape ?
Suggestion for a next work , rc kite buggy, same scale or bigger, great challenge anyway !
