I have no idea of these boats, but as far as I see the main wasn't sheeted out at all before the capsize. Is that not possible in this situation or on these boats? Would it not have helped by decreasing windward heel and keeping the boat upright?

Those are some very fancy boats.
Anyone interested in the Cup can travel back in time to the first race in 1895 and see the stark differences then and now. You can see for yourself where the design evolved into what they sail today. I am not alone when stating I prefer the yachts the past
to today's power and speed.
