  1. Definitely my Grail Boat! The Scutter rig I’m not sold on either (I have a Cutter and love it!).

The displacement is actually approx 27500 and not 21600.

The pride of ownership (read Hinkley) and emotional draw to a Shannon (almost) makes all that wood permissible. But…don’t kid yourself, unless you can afford someone to do the brightwork you will be quite busy indeed!

  2. Shoot. I sailed my family all over on a pearson triton 28. Sure it's small, but whatever, we have a blast. Problem is everyone else is getting bigger boats. I myself am still a proponent of smaller boats, they get sailed more. We are sooooo spoiled in the first world. Id stick with that beautiful seawind.

  3. Even after watching the other, and newer episodes, I think think make and model might be the best choice. Having bunk beds, and another berth is amazing.

  4. We owned 43 #49 (2001) for many years…to augment the counter space, we added a cutting board custom fit over the stove of matching Corian. This hull was in fact a carbon copy of our custom design (the first 3-cabin Shannon 43 every built)

  5. As a father of 4 who are 30,29,27,and 26 I would say that you need to really think a little bit about the space needed even with just 2 it's gonna be a nightmare till they are 5 or 6 with this little space. Good luck.

  6. I feel that choosing the Shannon is a no-brainer. Every boat will have something which doesn’t meet your current expectations; it is just a case of finding the boat which has the most ‘hits’ rather than ‘misses’. On the other side of the deep water, if you are in the warm climates, you will find creeks in the mangroves which are excellent cyclone shelter, if your boat is sufficiently shallow draft. (I am writing this from Australia). I would add davits across the stern for your tender, and I would recommend a rigid tender rather than an inflatable. I will be very interested to see which boat you finally settle on.

  7. For some reason I never liked that orange ish wooden color that boats always have. I would probably paint it white inside with some statement color. Is it just me, or is it wrong to do so as me ? Never knew much about sailboats, just found your amazing channel few hours ago but Im in love with your lifestyle and seriously considering getting one in the future and investing in living a lifestyle similar to yours <3

  8. I can't believe how beautiful they are. I loved all these boats, this one and the Sea Crest more than others, but I cannot understand why such boats can't be found anymore in today's market. Why can't modern makers replicate the absolute class of these old timers?

  9. I own a shannon 43. As the boat ages you sure appreciate the care and attention Walt and his team paid to make sure the boat will out live him. Not many boats today are made so that the future owners can replace components 20 years after they left the yard. Easily one of the best sail boats ever built.

  10. This is the boat they should have went with, IMO.

Shannon build quality is pretty much in a class by itself. Absolutely stunning.

  11. The small jib and big sail on the inner stay seems kinda dumb. The advantage of the inner being small is it can be self tacking.

  12. Definitely not too big! I'd be looking at somewhere between the 43'-50' because having an actual stateroom is sooo much better than just a v-berth as your master cabin. Having the extra room is so noticeable and it's worth it. We had a lot of fun in a 36' sloop with a v-berth quite a few years ago but there was just the two of us. Opposite the v-berth is almost always the two separate single sleepers – which end up as storage most the time! Not ideal for another couple. On the other hand it's a great excuse to just have a private getaway for two! We all end up meeting so many fellow sailors that are fun and always welcoming. Nothing is like the boating communities and the people that occupy the marinas as liveaboards too. They are always a good time. 🥂⚓

  13. Honestly, I wouldn’t worry too much about the labor involved with having to have all that beautiful wood varnished annually. One of the most beautiful things about sailing, are the countries that you visit and seeing just how far you can stretch your dollar. Cleaning, sanding and applying a wood varnish is a great job for you to give a local. For one, it doesn’t take too much skill. Secondly, it’s a great way to employ someone who definitely has less.
