It appears that there was a serious fault with computer software and the Captain had two choices, either take the bridge down or do what he did. Thankfully there was no loss of life. I’m sure this very experienced Captain will be totally vindicated.

27. It is a very tricky area and shallow. Trying to hold your position while the waiting for the bridge during the Heineken Regatta on a windy morning was always a challenge. This had to be a mechanical / electrical failure.

35. This was a problem due to a technical error in the engine's throttle, and the captain had no other choice.

I look at this and think about the conversations of designing "Fly by Wire" into Formula 1 cars (machines) I don't think I would be comfortable in any situation where I don't have manual control over my systems. My 50' Ketch can be a handful to dock in crosswinds and I can't imagine not having full manual control.
