  1. You guys should carry a propane torch and some aluminum brazing rods, you can fix anything with those. Check out Project Farm he has some good info on it.

  2. Fix it permenant like some said penetrating oil now reweld get working and re assess. . trade then.?.. yur motor is worth more working

  3. 20:00 Who knows the condition of the rest of the engine, but the right "handy repair guy" could fabricate a new exhaust mixer welded to a new flange. Where would you find this person, and what would that part cost? How much life is left in the engine otherwise?

  4. The scenery is so beautiful and stunning.Very enjoyable! Reminds me of my trips where I take the good music like the Guns N Roses, Imagine Draongs or the Delta Parole and then enjoy the powerful feeling of the sea. ¡vamos!

  5. Man, when I saw the level of corrosion around the exhaust elbow, not to mention it being FULLY SNAPPED OFF, I was like damn… Good luck with that epoxy Matt. The title was a bit of a spoiler though. If it's not too late, I highly recommend you rethink electric. If you're looking at dropping $10k on a diesel motor you can EASILY do a low-power electric conversion for about the same cost. The biggest downside will be minimal range, but if you're only cruising 10-20 miles under power (or just setting/lifting your anchor), then it's irrelevant. Then you won't have to worry about exhaust elbows, buying fuel, or maintaining it nearly as much. Just put some water in the batteries every so often and budget for replacing them every ~5 years, by which time you probably have another boat.

For an idea of cost breakdown, an electric motor equivalent to 30hp is about $2k, the mounting plate and gear reduction are under $1k, and for lead acid batteries, you can get them for around $200 each, I'd recommend about 8-24 depending on your range requirements. You can always add more later if you want, it's not rocket science, more a matter of space in your bilge. Say 16 batteries cost you around $3,200. A charger is around $700, and could take power from your solar panels. To be safe, add another grand for wiring, terminals, mounting the batteries, etc. Total is only $7,900 and the motor will easily fit in that space with room to spare. It's about as big as a small watermelon. I'm in the process of converting a 41' tollycraft from two gas 454's to electric, so if you want to chat and bounce ideas about electric around, let me know. A sailboat like your should be significantly cheaper and easier than this nightmare, haha!

  6. As a former mechanic and machinist I agree with your decision to replace the motor. The only other option I would consider in your shoes is to go on the hard, remove and rebuild that engine. Dunno about cost/time to get parts in PR for that, it could be close to a new one after drilling out bolts and re-tapping, parts fab or buy costs & time. Yanmar's are tough Japanese works of art, if I had my choice I'd certainly stick with it. I cant speak to Volvo except that some people absolutely love their heavy equipment. Service reports should be researched for Volvo before pulling the trigger.

  7. I have a Yanmar 2Gm20, which is probably the same vintage, but different model as yours, so I know something about Yanmar. I wouldn't trash an entire engine just because the exhaust mixer bolts are rusted. It's easier to hacksaw them flat, then drill and tap them out and put in new studs, than to pull and replace an entire engine, not to mention a few hundred bucks in parts and tools instead of $10K. If you take off just the cylinder head, and take it ashore, any decent machine shop can do that for short money. It would help to know 2 things: The exact model of Yanmar you have, and, more importantly, how many hours are on it. If you can't get that, then at least do a compression test, and engine oil analysis. That will tell you how much life is left in the old girl. Yanmars tend to run forever as long as the oil and fuel are kept clean. Looks to me like a couple hundred bucks in tools and parts would put you back in business. Seems crazy to me to trash what is probably a perfectly good engine, otherwise.

  8. Some day you will look back on all these challenges and how you worked together to get through them and realize they were some of the best days of your lives.

  9. go buy a small oxy-acetylene torch , then a muffler shop or an electric supply have the pieces bent drill hole for raw water port , use ni-cad brazzing rod and weld them together careful not to overheat castiron cooling to quickly may sumtimes cause it to crack. stow 'da anchor and have at it!

  10. So look…for every Diesel Splitter Hose dealer, and hardware store, and kool-aid stand, there's 25 of Those Guys.

Older ones have more Magic Junk on top shelves, and more experience in patching structural steel with spit and dead leaves.

You know Those Guys are there cuz there's roads, and roads mean motors.

One way to find gear heads is by following clusters of black stripes on roads.

  11. MASTRY Engine in St. Petersburg FL can get you the mix elbow for your motor. I have the exact same engine in my boat and had the same problem. They took care of it ($400!)

  12. Big fuss about something that happens every day in the world of boats. I sailed for over 30 yrs and had 2 engines blow up on me. Replaced them and carried on. Mind you that was before the days of YouTube where a blown engine is a three act Shakespearean play.

  13. I would not go with a volvo unless you have no other choice. Volvo makes good engines but the parts are brutal. Every part is more like 50% to 400% higher price than then equivalent part on a yanmar. Some are well that isn't too bad but still always more expensive and some are "you got to the fkn kidding me" expensive.

  14. New engine, new alternator that will charge your housebank and you can be Diesel Dan again. 🙂 From my couch it looks like a dependable motor is the best way to go.
